DC’s New Gods Heads into Production with Villains Announced

More is coming out about DC’s crowded film slate. A New Gods movie set to be directed by the one-time hopeful for helming Black Panther Ava Duvernay was announced last year. The word is it will center around Mr. Miracle and Big Barda and the villains they will fight have been revealed.

An exclusive report from Geeks Worldwide says the bad guys — or gals — Barda and Miracle will face are Granny Goodness and Female Furies. Granny and the Furies are the fierce matrons of Apokalips who have been a thorn in the side of Miracle, Superman, Orion, and various DC characters in numerous incarnations over the years.

Granny Goodness famously appeared in Superman the Animated Series, voiced by the legendary Ed Asner, who looked back on the role in the documentary “I Know That Voice” (2013). Rallying the Furies — comprised of Mad Harriet, Stompa, and Lashina — and Intergang to her side, Granny menaced Supergirl (and the Earth with a comet) in her first adventure. Later, using her powers of persuasion and mind control, Goodness brainwashed Superman into serving Darkseid.

First appearing in 1971 in the first issue of his eponymous series, Mister Miracle was created by Jack Kirby. Miracle is the adopted son of Darkseid, swapped for Orion by the wise and just High Father (the Zeus or Odin-like ruler of Apokalips’ close neighbor New Genesis) in a truce. Learning the art of escape, he turned hero to fight against his despotic dad. Barda led the Female Furies at first but eventually joined Miracle’s side.

Kirby created the entire world of the [easyazon_link identifier=”1401281699″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]New Gods[/easyazon_link] at DC, including Granny and her Furies, after he left Marvel. The pantheons of Apokalips and New Genesis are among the most celebrated creations to grace the pages of comic books. And Darkseid became DC’s penultimate scoundrel whom Zack Snyder wanted to make a focal point of his Extended Universe.

The New Gods film doesn’t have a release date yet. It is being written by Kario Salem and has not reached the pre-production stage so things could change between now and then. Maybe finally we will see Darkseid step foot into the DCEU.
