Dark Horse Comics and Matt Wagner Announce New Grendel Series!

Dark Horse Comics and Matt Wagner announced a brand new Grendel series, Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey.

Grendel creator Matt Wagner will write and draw the new series with colors by his son Brennan Wagner and letters by Dave Lanphear.

The series will see Grendel Prime head into space in order to find a new home for mankind.

Here’s the official description from the series according to Dark Horse:

“As civilization comes to an end on Earth, the final Grendel Khan gives Grendel Prime a new directive: Find a new home for the human race. But will the deadly and relentless paladin ultimately save humanity . . . or destroy it?”

Grendel was originally created in 1982 and made his first appearance in the anthology Comico Primer. The character would get his own series in 1983, but was soon cancelled due to Comico’s financial troubles. Wagner would then create Grendel stories that appeared in the back matter of Wagner’s Mage series. These would eventually be collected in a 48-page one-shot. The initial stories focused on Hunter Rose aka Grendel and his nemesis Argent the Wolf. The series has since evolved with tales taking place ranging from the near future to the 26th century. Rose would also not be the only person to assume the mantle of Grendel. Rose’s adopted daughter Stacy Palumbo gives birth to a daughter, Christine Spar, who becomes Grendel. Spar’s boyfriend Brian Li Sung would also become Grendel following her death.

Grendel has crossed over with Batman twice. The first sees Hunter Rose pitted against the Dark Knight. The second one sees Grendel Prime attempting to communicate with the soul of Hunter Rose, but is confronted by Batman.

Most recently, Grendel faced off against the Shadow in Dynamite Comics’ 2014 series [easyazon_link identifier=”1616556420″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Grendel vs. The Shadow[/easyazon_link].

The new series, Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey, will be an eight issue series. The first issue goes on sale October 2, 2019.
