Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ upcoming Star Wars movies will reportedly take place during the Old Republic.

Disney announced Benioff and Weiss would develop new Star Wars films in February of 2018 with Kathleen Kennedy praising their work, “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

A source who claims to have worked on all of the Star Wars films since Disney’s acquisition of the franchise tells Star Wars News Net that the Benioff and Weiss’ Star Wars movie could go into production this Fall.

“It is not the Rian Johnson trilogy, it is the Game of Thrones guys’ first movie, and it is set during the Old Republic, as Disney wants to open up the Star Wars timeline and appeal to a more ‘Game of Thrones’ style audience.”

The sourced added, “So the timeline is hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.” He also added that art departments are already doing pre-production work on the film.

“Filming starts in the Fall and art departments are in design phases now as the script is being finalized. That is all I know but I am 95% confident that this is accurate.”

If this rumor proves to be true, this could reinvigorate interest in the Star Wars franchise after Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi left the fanbase divided. The Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most popular games, let alone Star Wars games ever made.

The Knights of the Old Republic timeline even spawned an entire MMORPG game in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The timeline is full of rich characters from Revan to Bastila Shan.

But what might be even more interesting is if the film focuses on the split between the Jedi and the creation of the Sith. The film could actually delve into deeper topics among the two competing factions and how they viewed the world.

One thing appears to be clear, and Disney is looking to move away from the Skywalker saga with their upcoming Star Wars films. Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron, made that abundantly clear when he stated that Episode IX is “the end of the entire Skywalker saga.”

Would you be excited about a Star Wars movie set in the Old Republic? What would you want the movie to be about? Are there any characters you want to see in the film?
