Report: Game of Thrones Actor Richard Madden to Star as Ikaris in Marvel’s The Eternals
A new report details that Game of Thrones veteran Richard Madden will play Ikaris in the upcoming The Eternals film.
According to The Wrap, Madden, who also stars in Netflix’s The Bodyguard as David Budd, will star alongside Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani. Jolie is rumored to play opposite Madden as Sersi.
A previous report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals the film directed by Chloe Zhao will involve “the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”
The movie will be based on Jack Kirby’s The Eternals. Ikaris first appeared in Eternals #1 in 1976. The character was created by Jack Kirby and would be the main protagonist in Kirby’s original Eternals series. He would diligently work to protect humanity against the monstrous Deviants. During his time in Greece fighting a Minotaur-shaped Deviant, Ikaris married a human and they had a son Icarus. He would maintain his duties and serve as a protector of humanity against the Deviants.
While Ikaris served as a protector of humanity, Sersi would actually live and interact among humans. In fact, she would join the Avengers at the behest of Captain America and would even get involved in the Kree-Shi’ar War when she and a number of other Avengers attempted to murder the Kree Leader, the Supreme Intelligence.
Madden has quickly risen to become an A-list talent following his breakout role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones. He recently won a Golden Globe for his stunning performance in The Bodyguard and will appear in the upcoming biopic on Elton John titled, Rocketman. Madden will play Elton John’s former manager and lover John Reid.
Madden’s alleged casting appears to put to rest rumors Marvel Studios was looking for a gay actor to take the lead role in The Eternals. Madden has had a long list of girlfriends that include Jenna Coleman, Suki Waterhouse, and Ellie Bamber. Although there is speculation that Madden could be dating 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn.
A source told The Sun about Madden’s plans to move to Hollywood and discussed his relationship with Flynn, “While out there, he also met Brandon who is a massive deal Stateside and very well connected. They’ve been on several fun nights out together, and Brandon has introduced lots of his friends to Richard.” The source adds, “He’s even offered him his home to stay at whilst Richard sets up meetings, and tries his hand in Hollywood.”
While promoting Rocketman, Madden discussed the idea of casting people based on their sexuality with The Guardian, “It’s a really terrible route to go down if we start restricting people’s casting based on their personal lives.” He added, “We have to focus more on diversity and having everyone represented, but I’m also a firm believer in the best actor for the part.”
