Zachary Levi Provides Update on When Shazam! 2 Should Start Filming

Shazam! did fairly well at the box office this year, becoming the second hit for the rebooted DC Extended Universe after Aquaman. A spinoff in Black Adam is a sure thing, as is a sequel. The only thing is when we can expect it.

Sooner rather than later, apparently, according to star Zachary Levi, who spoke with the Associated Press leading up to his hosting gig at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Currently, he said, Shazam! 2 is deep into the writing stage and should start filming in late spring or early summer 2020.

Shazam! released in theaters at the start of April. If the sequel releases early in the spring years from now too is unclear. No date is set but it won’t likely reach theaters until 2022 or later — “later” being the more bankable outcome.

Nothing plot-related is known so far but could involve Dr. Sivana and the wormy Mr. Mind seeking control of the Seven Magical Realms. Bringing in the Monster Society of Evil as extra muscle would make sense to that end.

Shazam

Levi stars as the original, Fawcett Publications character known as Captain Marvel in Shazam! — a legacy character if there ever was one — and is also part of the hit comedy The Marvelous Ms. Maisel for Amazon. He remarked how his work as of late brought him to new heights, earning him the task of emcee at the Movie Awards:

“This awards show is an extension of what ‘Shazam!’ has brought me. It’s helped me jump into a higher caliber of hosting. I love feeling joy and love bringing joy. With this show [the MTV Awards], I think that is the best approach.”

Known as well for the NBC series Chuck, he took over the role of Fandral in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That Fandral and the rest of The Warriors Three were killed off in Thor: Ragnarok and not developed further deeply disappointed him.

He won’t have to worry about that with Shazam. Warner intends to fully develop the Marvel Family and its key figures, even giving special attention to its enemies. Black Adam’s solo movie starring Dwayne Johnson starts production around the same time as Shazam! 2 and is bound to lead to the inevitable encounter between the two magical goliaths.

Shazam! comes to digital July 2nd. It’s Blu-ray release is July 16th.
