Report: Justice League 2 Is Dead and Jesse Eisenberg Was Finally Told

Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in "Justice League" - Warner Bros.

Zack Snyder’s second Justice League movie would have been out this year. To the surprise of probably precious few, it isn’t happening — at least not in the foreseeable future or in the form we’d expect.

What’s more, someone who was a huge part of the cast was finally told and may be the last to know. Lex Luthor actor Jesse Eisenberg was reportedly informed, if he hadn’t been clued in already, by a journalist the sequel is officially off.

MTV News correspondent and podcaster Josh Horowitz claims in a tweet he is the one who broke the news to Eisenberg.

Horowitz didn’t reveal if it was in a podcast, an interview, or an off-the-record encounter, but his followers and others want to know.

As he mentioned, there is an IMDb page. Its authenticity is questionable since it hasn’t been updated in almost a year and it is unclear who created it.

We made note of Justice League 2’s IMDb listing once before in a previous story. Studio heads have been saying over the past year a shared universe was no longer part of the playbook, and there is no need to bring the roster of heroes together, a claim the listing shed some doubt on.

Variety — possibly complicating matters further — reported Ben Affleck would be back as Batman in a Justice League sequel. Affleck contradicted this when he was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel and he has been firm publicly that he has moved on.

Snyder was planning a second and a third Justice League movie that would have involved time travel, Lois Lane’s death, and lingering plot threads such as Batman v. Superman’s Knightmare scene and Superman’s turn to the dark side would have been explained.

Kevin Smith stated details he is privy to on his Fatman Beyond podcast. Snyder intended to go cosmic and introduce Green Lantern.

“It was going to cosmic as they take the fight to Apocalypse, and New Genesis, presumably, but we know Apocalypse. The Green Lantern Corps was involved. Because do you remember that shot of Alfred going like, ‘Thank, God, you’re here. Let’s hope you’re not too late.’ And everyone was like, ‘Oh, that’s Superman.’ (because the S is the hope). A guy I met and talked to and worked on the set was like, ‘We had green lights that were flashing on Jeremy Irons to project a green glow.’ I said, ‘Why?’ Because it was Green Lantern. But then things changed in production.”

Darkseid was supposed to be in Snyder’s cut of Justice League leading the battle against the Earth’s ancient gods and protectors. An appearance at the end would’ve set up for part two. Joss Whedon’s reshoots replaced him with Steppenwolf and downplayed indications of a sequel with his master and ruler of Apokolips.

Last time we saw Eisenberg’s Lex, he was on a yacht recruiting Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello) to form the Injustice League. It appears that development won’t see a resolution.
