Rumor: Marvel to Develop Richard Rider Nova Film with Spider-Man Director Jon Watts
A new rumor indicates Marvel Studios is looking to develop a Richard Rider Nova film with Spider-Man director Jon Watts.
The rumor comes from Mikey Sutton and his Geekosity Facebook group.
Sutton writes:
“I’m hearing that Marvel Studios wants to launch this Human Rocket they’ve been developing for years (I scooped it ages ago), and is eyeing Watts for the position. Human Rocket? His name is Richard Rider, otherwise known as Nova.”
He then notes that Marvel Studios is looking to nab Spider-Man director Jon Watts for the project.
“Watts will want a pay raise after Far From Home netted a billion globally, and the Mouse will pull up the trucks filled with cash outside of his doorway.”
Not only does Sutton indicate Marvel is working on a Richard Rider Nova film, but he notes the movie will build to an Annihilation epic with Galactus and the Silver Surfer. In fact, he speculates that Watts could be up for a potential Young Avengers film.
“And don’t be surprised if he ends being discussed for the Young Avengers movie, too. (Wait, wot?) Nova will gradually to build to an Annihilation epic with Galactus and the Silver Surfer.”
This is the second rumor in less than two months to surface around Richard Rider. TVO at Lords of the Long Box reported Marvel Studios was already looking at casting Richard Rider. (Related: Rumor: Marvel Studios Developing Richard Rider and Nova for Marvel Cinematic Universe)
TVO stated:
“According to an insider, Marvel Studios is setting up a meeting with a 20-something actor who appeared in a Christopher Nolan movie…to audition for Richard Rider otherwise known as Nova the Human Rocket.”
Richard Rider aka Nova and Marvel Studios
In fact, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo teased that Richard Rider actually appeared in Avengers: Endgame during the fight against Thanos. Joe Russo stated, “Look closely at that scene again. And you will see Richard Rider in the background of a shot. Easter egg.”
However, Russo would eventually retract that statement, “That was actually a joke on our part.”
Nevertheless, Nova has been discussed for quite a bit. Avengers: Endgame writer Christopher Markus revealed that Nova had a possibility of showing up in Infinity War and Endgame.
“I remember going through several scenarios of Nova. Thanos could come and kill all the Nova Corps, except one guy. Richard Rider, who then becomes … I think in that scenario he became the herald, kind of like the Hulk was [in Infinity War when he crashed into the Sanctum Sanctorum]. Someone who could come out and tell people. We had everything. Literally every variation we could think of or that was sitting there in the comics untapped. With absolutely no value placed next to them.”
Kevin Feige has also hinted that Nova is in the works:
“Nova is… if we have a big board with a bunch of characters that have more immediate potential, Nova is on that board.”
He would go on to confirm he was in the early drafts of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
“Because of the connection to the Guardians universe, because there are more than one examples to pull from in the comics that are interesting. And you’re absolutely right, he was in the earliest drafts of the [Guardians of the Galaxy].”
Young Avengers
As for the idea of Young Avengers, an alleged 4chan leak from back in May hinted that Marvel Studios was pursuing a New Avengers. A previous rumor hinted that a New Avengers film would feature the Young Avengers team from the comics. (Related: Alleged Marvel Studios Leak Reveals “New Avengers” Film Slated for 2022)
That core comic team consisted of Kate Bishop as Hawkeye, Hulkling, Iron Lad, Patriot, Wiccan, Stature, and a new version of Vision.
The Kate Bishop role is all but confirmed with Hailee Steinfeld reportedly offered the position. They could also bring back actor Ty Simpkins from Iron Man 3 to play Iron Lad. Simpkins did indicate he would be up for the role of the character that eventually becomes Kang the Conqueror. The other Young Avengers could also be introduced in a number of Disney+ shows. Wiccan and the new Vision could spin out of the WandaVision Disney+ show. Patriot could also be introduced in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. It’s also possible they could include She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel as they were recently confirmed to have their own Disney+ shows.
What do you make of this rumor? Do you want to see Richard Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Do you think his introduction could lead to a New Avengers film with the introduction of Galactus and Silver Surfer?
