Colin Farrell Confirms He Is Penguin in The Batman But Denies He Will Be Blond or Silver-haired with Facial Hair

Colin Farrell confirms what we already know: he is playing The Penguin in The Batman. However, he denies he is growing facial hair or dying the hair atop his head like the leaks show.

Farrell was on Ellen recently and said he starts “something in a couple of weeks in London” when she asked about the images online purporting to show him with an umbrella and light hair.

He confessed he is playing “Oz Cobblepot…a character known as the Penguin,” which got a cheer from the studio audience.

Addressing that hair and his mustache, Farrell shot down the conclusion most reached, that he bleached it and grew one for the part. He claimed to the contrary this:

“That was me not camera ready. That was me before I was hit with makeup. I decided to dye my hair after I got back to Los Angeles so I went to Rite Aid and spent about eighty dollars on Loreal’s finest… And then I had somebody come to the house and fix it.”

Farrell added he has a ritual after filming a movie – he does something “as simple as paint a nail black or get a haircut” to get out of his last character. He said dying his hair was an instance of that but he had to change it with filming of The Batman around the corner.

Unfortunately for him, his explanation and honesty are falling under scrutiny and for good reason. Between Will Smith coming clean on The Tonight Show about embellishing often his thoughts when promoting his work and Ewan McGregor lying for years about reprising Obi-Wan Kenobi, it’s clear actors are ordered to keep things close to the vest when promoting or developing their films.

Farrell might be denying and fibbing because he is obligated to throw people off the scent. His “Oz” or Penguin has a probability of being a silver fox, but Farrell and Matt Reeves wish not to spoil the surprise.

It’s also entirely likely Farrell was undergoing a fitting. He consistently states his first call time for a day on set is weeks away so it doesn’t sound like he’s filmed anything yet.

Either way, there is a veil of secrecy surrounding The Batman, as Farrell told Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday on his show. He added he and Matt Reeves are still working on designs for Penguin, bolstering my theory of a fitting:

“It’s all very hush, hush. But it’s a really beautiful script that he wrote. He has a real love for it, man. So we are still in the process of just finishing the design, the aesthetic of the character.”

Farrell continued he is still talking things over with Reeves and then awed over the “beautiful dark moving script.” Said the actor:

“I’m still in the process of talking to Matt Reeves, who’s the director who wrote the script, and wrote a really, really beautiful dark moving script, really gorgeous.”

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman is out June 25, 2021. A final design for Farrell as Penguin should be known long before then.
