Composer Michael Giacchino Says The Batman Will Be “A Whole New Take On The Character”

Film composer Michael Giacchino is setting up for leaving his mark on The Batman and, amidst that, he reveals he has seen the suit the star Robert Pattinson will wear.

Giacchino didn’t divulge much to Hey U Guys when he chatted with them at the BAFTA Awards other than “I’ve seen it!”

The look of the Batsuit is a mystery to the public right now but there is an expectation it will be based on the tactical and practical costume from Batman: Noel designed by Lee Bermejo.

Costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who admits she’s never worked on superhero material before, is responsible for dressing the rogues of Gotham. Known most recently for Oscar contenders 1917 and Little Women, Durran stated when talking with Fashionista the comics will hold sway over Matt Reeves as long as they serve his vision:

“Because Batman is a man, it’s not fully in the [superhero] universe. But it is a new adventure for me and it’s very interesting because it’s something I’ve not done before. The absolute thing about it, yet again, [is] the director. I’m trying to make the film that director Matt Reeves wants to make. The other things — the previous films, the comics and everything else — are relevant to a degree that they’re relevant to a Matt Reeves movie. So, again, that’s how important the director is, because you’re concentrating on their vision.”

As far as the actor in the outfit, Giacchino knew Pattinson was right for the part:

“He’s an amazing actor, he’s an incredible actor, and in this business you get pigeonholed for one thing, and if it goes off well, then that’s the only thing you’re gonna be known for. For someone like him, that’s really not a fair assessment. He is an amazing actor who can do pretty much anything, and that’s what I’m excited about, to see him in this role doing something different.”

And “something different” is what he and director Matt Reeves want to bring to the fold:

“Matt and I have talked about this for well over a year now. We’re like best friends so we talk all the time anyway, so this is just a normal part of our conversations. ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we did this? Wouldn’t it be fun if we did this? Let’s take it in this direction, do something different.’ That’s what we’re trying to do, is to take it and do our version of it, the thing that we would want to do, and hopefully that is different from everyone else’s.”

Giacchino has scored for Matt Reeves’ Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes. He’s also done Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Spider-Man: Far From Home for Marvel.

Giacchino says he was a Batman fan as a kid and thinks it’s fun to do a new unique version. He likens work on The Batman to when the books change creative hands:

“I used to love going in and seeing everyone’s different take on Batman. You’d get a comic book series and it would be a whole new take on the character, and that was always fun to do, and I feel like we’re part of that whole tapestry at this point.”

That “tapestry” comes out in The Batman June 25, 2021.
