A new rumor details that Warner Bros. is in talks with Henry Cavill to return as Superman in Shazam! 2.
The rumors comes from Lords of the Long Box via Mikey Sutton.
Lords of the Long Box host TVO explains, “Admittedly we were skeptical of Henry Cavill returning to DC Films after Justice League underperformed at the box office and fell out of the DCEU with Zack Snyder getting booted and Ben Affleck hanging up the ole cape and cowl.”
He continues, “WB executives had given up on the Man of Steel even clearing the way for Greg Berlanti to do his own version of Superman for TV. So what is really going on?”
TVO then details that the Rock is really pushing for the DC Universe to be truly connected and is a big backer of Henry Cavill.
He states, “Well, Mikey is hearing that The Rock, Black Adam himself, truly wants a connected DC movie universe and has been a big backer of Henry Cavill. WB placed the misfiring of the DCEU partly on Cavill as his Superman didn’t do the box office numbers like he should have. Especially in comparison with what Kevin Feige has done with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the rest of the MCU.”
TVO continues, “But Cavill is a charismatic, heroic figure who just wasn’t written and directed properly. Mikey has been told that Cavill is in talks to return as Superman in Shazam! 2.”
He then details some plot details on what Superman’s role in Shazam! 2 could be.
“However, it won’t be a big role. Discussions have been for Superman to fight DC’s Captain Marvel in an epic scene that finds the Kryptonian under the control of Mister Mind. Mister Mind was teased at the end of the first Shazam! movie if you don’t remember.”
“Will this come to pass? It all depends on the contract negotiations. Henry Cavill has gotten a second wind with the popularity of The Witcher on Netflix. Cavill and Shazam! 2 could give Superman a new path in the DCEU,” says TVO.
TVO concludes, “Oh and by the way, Cavill as Wolverine is utter bullshit. But keep in mind that if Cavill does decide to resurrect the Superman role kiss any hope of him ending up at Marvel Studios goodbye. They do want him there though. Just not as Logan.”
A separate rumor in November 2019 also indicated that Superman could show up in Black Adam 2. That rumor also indicated that The Rock was the driving force behind Superman fighting Black Adam.

Grace Randolph even pointed out that The Rock’s ex-wife Dany Garcia is both The Rock’s representative as well as Cavill’s.
I’m hearing Superman wouldn’t show up until Black Adam 2 – but The Rock does want that fight, and he wants Cavill of course becomes Dany reps him

Back in November, Cavill told Men’s Health that he wasn’t done with Superman, “The cape is in the closet.” He added, “It’s still mine.”
He elaborated, “I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”

Cavill also indicated that he had pitched a Superman movie in an interview back in December 2019. He detailed what his pitch entailed:
“I’d like to delve more into the aspect of Superman [that] we traditionally know, coupled with where we left him with Man of Steel. It’s the hero who is trying to exist in a world where people may say he’s not relevant anymore — where, actually, he’s extraordinarily relevant and it’s him coming to terms with that and becoming that relevance and showing people that hope does exist without it being too chocolate box.”
What do you make of this new rumor? Do you want to see Cavill show up in Shazam! 2? Do you think this could lead to another Superman solo film?
