Elizabeth Olsen Talks About Her Experiences With Witchcraft: “I Am A Witness To It”
Actress Elizabeth Olsen plays a witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and apparently she isn’t a stranger to witchcraft in real life.
The MCU actress has been playing the role of Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch since 2014 and some people have always wondered if the actress has a passion for witchcraft in real life like the character she plays in the movies.
In a press junket interview hyping up the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Olsen was asked by Australian outlet Pedestrian.tv about her thoughts and experiences with witchcraft outside of her role.
One of my biggest career bucket list items has been crossed off as I finally got to chat to Elizabeth Olsen to celebrate #DoctorStrange. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. As requested by the #ScarletWitch fans, I asked her about her favourite costume first up. Enjoy! pic.twitter.com/yCrWgvog1c

When asked if she was into “witchy stuff” she responded, “I am witness to it. I don’t practice it but I have friends that do and people around me who do.”
“I do feel though that I and some people in my life are a little bit witchy,” Olsen said.
“And I think that that has something to do just being connected to nature and to allowing certain thoughts, or surprising dreams, like actually allowing — take them in. And I think there is something about that in itself that is very witchy,” she concluded.
Last year, following the series finale of the Disney+ original “Wandavision,” Elizabeth Olsen talked about how excited her co-star Kathryn Hahn (who plays the role of fellow witch Agatha Harkness) was being involved in a series led by two powerful witches.
Olsen said in an interview with Glamour UK. “She (Hahn) really was like, ‘We are witches. How amazing is that? Like, we are these powerful women who men are terrified by, and they had to murder us because they were so scared of our power and our temptation and everything that is so mysterious about being a woman. Women were weaponized, so to have this ownership of witches, again, is really fun!’”
Olsen also revealed that Hahn provided her a “witchy gift” of a box of crystals and magical stones when the show wrapped up its production. “It was this beautiful, weird little box of treasures,” said Olsen.
Back in 2013, Olsen claimed she was an atheist and had been one since the age of 13. She told Dazed & Confused, “When I was 13, I told my parents I didn’t believe in God any more.”
She continued, “I wanted to be an atheist because I believed that religion should be about community and having a place to go in prayer, not something that should determine women’s freedoms.”
If there is one thing about the witchy character of Scarlet Witch that Olsen is not a fan of, it is some of her past costumes in movies such as Captain America: Civil War.
Olsen commented about how she felt like her Civil War costume was one of her least favorite outfits that “needed an upgrade.” In 2018, Olsen stated that she did not like how “revealing” some of her older costumes were.
“It would just not be a cleavage corset. I like corsets, but I’d like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them—Tessa Thompson does, Scarlett does. I would like to cover up a bit,” she said. “It’s funny because sometimes I look around and I’m just like—wow, I’m the only one who has cleavage, and that’s a constant joke because they haven’t really evolved my superhero costume that much.”
Olsen also took exception to the original Scarlet Witch costume in the comics, “But then you look at where it started in the comic books and it was a leotard and a headband so…oh, it’s horrible, it’s so horrible. So at least they know that’s not cool.”
She added, “But then they made Wonder Woman, you know? And that’s what she’s in. I think of the costumes and what we have to wear—it’s more about iconic images, because that’s what these movies are…. I think that’s the goal with the costumes, and it’s not representing the average woman.”
Olsen did note that her favorite outfit is her current look for the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film.
What are your thoughts on Olsen’s opinion about Witchcraft and her MCU costumes?
