Another Disney Box Office Disaster, ‘Strange World’ Only Grosses $18.6 Million In Opening Weekend, Described As “Massive Financial Flop”

Strange World, the latest animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, bombed at the box office only grossing $18.6 million at the domestic box office.

FAMILY TRIP – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed comedy adventure “Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land. The voice cast includes Jaboukie Young-White as 16-year-old Ethan, who longs for adventure beyond the family farm; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and loving wife and mom; and Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a brilliant family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission. Helmed by director Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), with Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”) producing, “Strange World” releases November 23, 2022. © 2022 Disney. That underperformed expectations from box office tracking website Box Office Pro. The site predicted back at the end of October that Strange World would gross between $20 million and $30 million in its opening weekend.

Those predictions were adjusted downward ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend to $15 to $25 million.

LOST AND FOUND — Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed comedy adventure “Strange World” introduces the Clades, a family that comes together in an uncharted, treacherous land. Jake Gyllenhaal voices Searcher Clade, who unexpectedly finds himself on a mission to this strange world, where he happens upon his long-lost, larger-than-life father. Voiced by Dennis Quaid, Jaeger Clade always wanted to be the kind of explorer legends are made of—but, lost during an expedition, nobody had heard from him in decades. Not only did the film fail to meet original expectations, but it reportedly has a production budget between $135 million and $180 million. Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro reported, “Strange World cost $135M before P&A.” Meanwhile Variety’s Rebecca Rubin reported, “The $180 million-budgeted “Strange World” is poised to be another money loser for Disney.”

That means the film has to make between $335 million and $450 million to break even.

THREE GENERATIONS AND A BLUE BLOB — Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed comedy adventure “Strange World” introduces three generations of Clades, a family that comes together in the midst of an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a slew of ravenous creatures, a three-legged dog and a mischievous blob called Splat. The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; and Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure. Helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”), “Strange World” releases November 23, 2022. © 2022 Disney. YouTuber OMB Reviews notes the film “had flop written all over it.”

He explains, “It was a film that they didn’t really market all that well. The marketing that they did do for this film wasn’t really effective. I still have not seen a trailer for this film so I still have no idea what it’s about.”

“You add on top of that the talk and conversation about how they are pushing these characters, pushing LGBTQ — whatever, again, the acronym is now, I don’t care,” he opined. “They keep adding random things and just making things up as they go it seems.”

CAN I CALL YOU SPLAT?—Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed comedy adventure “Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land. The voice cast includes Jaboukie Young-White as 16-year-old Ethan, who finds the adventure he’s wanted for a long time when he ends up in a strange world with strange creatures like a mischievous blue blob he calls Splat. “But regardless of any of that, the film just didn’t seem like it was going to do all that well even regardless of any of that,” OMB Reviews continued. “Even if that wasn’t a part of the story the fact is that this is a film that is featuring a brand new original, somewhat original story, coming out over Thanksgiving weekend up against the third weekend of Black Panther. It’s almost as if Disney wanted this film to do poorly.”

He then shared his own analysis, “Or rather what I personally think is the truth, is they knew this film was not going to be successful so instead of putting it out on a weekend by itself to maybe give it the best chance of at least being the number one film at the box office, they said, ‘Hey, might as well release it over Thanksgiving where most people are out of school that way we can try and make some money off of this because ultimately it’s going to be a pretty massive financial loss for the company.'”

A little bit later he asserted, “Not looking good for Disney in the long term for this movie.”

ALL ABOARD — Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-adventure “Strange World” journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far— most crucial mission. The film features the voices of (clockwise from top left) Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, the leader of Avalonia; Jake Gyllenhaal as farmer and father Searcher Clade; Dennis Quaid as diehard explorer and Searcher’s father, Jaegar Clade; Gabrielle Union as pilot and mother Meridian Clade; and Jaboukie Young-White as the youngest Clade, Meridian and Searcher’s son, Ethan. “Strange World” releases November 23, 2022. © 2022 Disney. Looking at the film’s global box office haul, OMB Reviews asserted, “$27.8 million worldwide out of a $180 million budget means this film is going to be a massive financial flop.”

He would later reiterate why he believes the film is failing, “I don’t this film is failing because of it being ‘woke,’ I think it’s more about the marketing and the fact that Disney clearly threw this film out to the wolves knowing that it would fail, to try and make at least some money back even though it’s ultimately not going to really be worth it in the long run.”
