Zack Snyder Leaves The Door Open For A ‘Justice League’ Continuation And A Return To DC Movies

Justice League and Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is quite literally coming “Full Circle” with his cinematic DC tenure that, though polarizing, just wouldn’t die. Those two movies and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are being shown at an event that is ostensibly meant to close this chapter of the filmmaker’s career, but it could whet appetites for more.

Snyder and the newly christened DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran have never seemed more ready to move on in recent months. However, the former still sounds like he’s holding onto hope for a comeback, should an opening arise. And one might, even if in the form of a graphic novel of his planned Justice League 2 and 3.

“I would really enjoy that if it was a possibility,” he said when he appeared on The Nerd Queens to promote the Full Circle screening and the charity named in honor of his late daughter, Autumn. “There was a time when we were gonna do that, and then there was a sort of change of desire, I guess.”

Snyder stepped away from completing his vision after his daughter committed suicide during the production of Justice League. When the push for releasing his cut of the film heated up, he shared her story and brought greater attention to mental health issues. Those missions were a success, and he exhibited storyboards detailing the sequels’ entire story.

There were moves behind the scenes to adapt them into a graphic novel or two. The momentum cooled down amid a chaotic corporate merger, but DC is still near and dear to him. “These DC characters are dear to me,” Snyder said, although he doesn’t know if or when he’d find time to pitch in with the DCU.

World-building his next Netflix film, Rebel Moon, is keeping him busy and the same initiatives he was planning for his Justice League are on the table for his grungy space dystopia. “We’re doing a graphic novel for Rebel Moon, I think we’re gonna do an animated short,” Snyder revealed. “We’re gonna do a bunch of other things that are just insane…”

Rebel Moon is unfolding similarly to the way Army of the Dead did – with spinoffs in the works – but could Netflix make a purchase that puts more on Snyder’s plate, and opens that door to DC all the way? The latest social media campaign is urging Warner Bros. to sell the Snyderverse to their streaming competitor.

Whether this can happen or not, Snyder had a disappointing but open answer for Film Junkee. “[What’s] probably amazing to learn is that my influence over those things is very small,” he said. “The truth is…whatever control over the IP that exists…that’s not my part, that’s not my role. That’s, as they say, above my pay grade.”

He would add that, though WB has been “beyond kind, and caring, and personal,” in giving him their blessing for Full Circle, he has “no idea what they’re up to.” Snyder also said he has “no complaints” working with them now and he is close with Gunn. It may be feasible then that the two sides can smooth things over, but only time will tell.
