‘Man of Steel’ Second Unit Director Reacts To David Corenswet Superman Costume: “Who Thought This Was The Best Option?”
Short of dividing fans, the suit reveal for Superman with David Corenswet left many of them unimpressed. Turned off by the bulky, faded costume and the actor’s blase expression, some of them photoshopped improvements while others went online to vent their disappointment.
Within the chorus of critiques, there is a feeling that this was another slap in the face to Henry Cavill as someone who vaguely resembles the still-spry actor is standing in for him.
That sort of adverse reaction should be expected from that certain swath of fandom who supported Zack Snyder and his vision unwaveringly. However, the disapproval casts a broader net in that camp and catches more than the typical fan.
Snyder collaborators from the filmmaker’s DCEU days are also getting in on the act. Clay Staub, who was a second unit director on Man of Steel most notably, made his feelings known in a recent X post.
“Who thought this was the best option for a First Look?” it began. Top to bottom, Staub was not a fan of numerous details, including the main ones average onlookers had a problem with.
“Really, I’m not joking, speaking solely from the layout perspective, the pose (pulling his boot on) [makes] the suit chest and arms look bulky and rubbery,” he continued.

Staub also took a sarcastic jab at the decision to bring back the red trunks as he concluded with, “BTW are those trunks we’re returning to, I’m asking for a friend.”
Staub might be the odd man out when it comes to the Man of Tomorrow’s signature look that lasted on screen until 2006 when Brandon Routh wore the cape and accompanying tights. Out of all the weird aspects, the trunks are getting the fewest complaints.
Most fan-generated photoshops are keeping them – and Corenswet for that matter – only to go further and restore the classic look everyone of all ages can appreciate. At least that’s something that captures the essence of ‘Legacy.’
