She was raised by the wolf goddess Moro. Her parents threw her at the feet of the goddess after they came under attack for damaging the forest.

After being raised by Moro, Princess Mononoke believes she is a wolf. She acts as the protector of the forest and animals that inhabit it. She even attempts to assassinate Laby Eboshi or Irontown believing her death will result in the end of human expansion and growth into the forest.

She eventually is able to recognize her humanity through the affections of Ashitaka. However, she chooses to remain a protector of the forest after the battle with the Forest Spirit. However, she does promise to visit Ashitaka when she can.

In the original concept for Princess Mononoke, San was the third princess of a kingdom that sent her to marry a monster. However, it was adjusted to the current plot and she becomes the third child of the wold goddess Moro.

Princess Mononoke was released in 1997 in Japan. It would not make it to the United States until October of 1999. When it was released in Japan it broke the box office record for a domestic film. The film would go on to win Best Picture in the Japan Academy Prize. It would also win the Saturn Award in 2001 for the Best Home Video Release.

Princess Mononoke was voiced by Yuriko Ishida. Claire Danes would provide the English dub.
