It will be directed by Ryu Nakayama and written by Hiroshi Seko.

Character design will be done by Kazutaka Sugiyama with Tatsuya Yoshihara as the action director. Shinto Nakazono is the chief director and Kiyotaka Oshiyama is in charge of devil design. Yusuke Takeda is the art director and Kensuke Ushio is the head of music.

In a statement provided to Anime Eiga and machine translated via Google, director Ryu Nakayama said, “I am honored to be involved as a director because it was originally my favorite work. It is a work that many people can enjoy, both the original readers and those who know from the animation. We will make it sincerely with the aim of achieving this.”

The anime is an adaptation of the Chainsaw Man manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto that was published in Shuiesha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 2018 to 2020.

The series follows Denji a young man drowning in debt. And that’s not an understatement he’s sold his kidney, his right eye, and even one of his nuts and he’s still over 38 million yen in debt. The kicker is the debt isn’t really his. It’s his father’s and he owes it to the yakuza.

In order to pay off his debt, he hunts demons with his devil-dog Pochita that doubles as a chainsaw.

However, the yakuza that he owes his debt to eventually come under the sway of a zombie devil and betray Denji slicing him up and leaving him for dead.

Fortunately for Denji he made a pact with Pochita that if he ended up getting killed, Pochita could take over his body in order to live out Denji’s simple dreams of eating bread with jam on it and hugging a girl.

Pochita takes over his body and Chainsaw Man is born. He comes complete with a pull cord in the middle of the chest. Upon pulling the cord he transforms with chainsaws coming out of both his hands and a giant chainsaw as a head.

The entire 97 chapter run of the manga is currently available through VIZ Media’s digital collaboration with Shonen Jump. The manga’s 7th volume will be available to purchase in October 2021.
