Secrets, lies, and conspiracies, for most people these are just words that can drive some good storytelling. Yet for others they take a more sinister meaning, because they are the foundations of our modern society. Things they point to range from the assassination of JFK, to sightings of creatures that aren’t cataloged, and to how the most powerful families in the world are connected. For most eyes though, that door with all of the information, secrets and evidence is closed, and bolted shut. Van Jensen continues to steer us through massive complex world that is Cryptocracy, as each issue presses forward the depth of each character only grows. And with it, some of the best and worst elements of humanity shines brilliantly through the pages. By far my favorite part of this issue was the nod to Edward Snowden on page thirteen which left me smiling. That little bit of detail is an excellent example of Van Jensen’s ability to subtly tie the reader deeper into his story, by using elements from the real world.
As you continue down the rabbit hole that Cryptocracy #4 is, you quickly get lost in a world that is extremely rich in both depth, and information. It allows you to immerse easily as they follow the story. The characters continue to open up right before your eyes as you learn more about them and their past. This allows you to look back on past issues, and see reasons why certain actions were taken. This allows the conspiracy to rest for an issue, and not overwhelm you with too much information.
Pete Woods pushes forward with his art as the world of Cryptocracy continues to grow. As you enter the “Preserve” for example you will see numerous creatures that are done in an impressive fashion. The world is getting bigger as you go through each issue, and Pete is doing a great job at keeping up on the art department, without scaling back on quality. As Van Jensen writes up a detailed and complex story, Pete on his end continues to keep up with the writing and pace with his art by making sure that the art that details the world is big enough to house so much information.
The Verdict
In [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LYHPIZ1″ locale=”US” tag=”bounintocomi-20″]Cryptocracy #4[/easyazon_link] enemies are better known, but there is still not enough information to connect all of the dots. Van Jensen does a great job at keeping the story at bay by slowly revealing information at key points. This keeps you guessing as well as imagining what the answers could be. Pete Woods continues to craft a masterful world with his art. As our world is getting smaller with the dawn of the digital age, Pete builds a world so huge and vast that unimaginable beings can exist right under our noses. Cryptocracy #4 continues to push on what must be on the back of everyone’s mind this election season, which is. What is really real? Can all of this be chance, or, and worse yet, can the world be really ruled by a small elite?
