Comic Book Review: The Life of Captain Marvel #3
Wherein My Favorite Superhero Continues to Act Like a Douche, We Get About Three Pages of Actual Superhero Comic and Carol’s Mom Debuts a Bit of a Makeover.
The [easyazon_link identifier=”B07H9F2BWV” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Life of Captain Marvel #3[/easyazon_link] is yet another installment in Margaret Stohl’s half-hearted attempt to turn a superhero comic into a bad Lifetime Original Movie. I mean… uh… to… give Captain Marvel a new origin story more in line with the upcoming movie. Yeah! That’s the ticket!
This book is more of the same awful shtick. Stohl has no feel for the character, the plot is boring and plodding, the dialogue is universally bad. The truly unforgivable thing here is that Margaret Stohl is a much better writer than this. It’s almost like she hates Carol Danvers and is simply going through the motions with this series as a favor to Sana Amanat. Fortunately, all of this mess is coming to an end in a couple of issues, and I can be hopeful that Kelly Thompson will have a better feel for her. The series gets its annual reboot in January so keep your fingers crossed that it’s at least as good as her work on Mr. and Mrs. X.
But Isn’t There Anything That Makes This Comic Anything More Than Expensive Bird Cage Liner?
Nope. Next!
Seriously?
Well, it is issue #3 so the mini-series is almost over. The series started out bad and it continues to be, so you know what you’re getting into when you pick up an issue. Wait! I just thought of something. It’s consistent. (There’s the pull quote for the back of the inevitable collected edition.)
The final three pages of [easyazon_link identifier=”B07DTZ8P98″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]The Life of Captain Marvel #3[/easyazon_link] actually feel like a decent superhero story is getting ready to finally dig itself out of the dumpster fire, but don’t hold your breath. In a perfect world two and three-quarters of interminable bad set-up would pay off with a rousing denouement, but at this point, I don’t think it’s likely. Even the artwork by the normally amazing Carlos Pacheco and Marguerite Sauvage is lackluster and just seems sort of phoned in. There again, you can lay the blame for that firmly at the feet of Margaret Stohl because she hasn’t given either of them anything interesting to draw.
The Verdict
[easyazon_link identifier=”B07H9G6C7Q” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]The Life of Captain Marvel #3[/easyazon_link] is flat-out horrible I don’t recommend it unless you have a bird cage that needs some expensive papering. I probably wouldn’t feed it to a small animal or put the bird in a situation where he can actually chew it because they still use formaldehyde in the printing process and that’s just not good for anyone. If you have a puppy and you’re out of piddle pads this comic would be a good candidate. Other than that, save your money. Judging by the pile of unsold copies of The Life of Captain Marvel rotting on the shelves of my LCS, I’m not telling you all anything new.
