With Deadpool’s untitled sequel rushing towards it’s May 18th premiere, I thought it was high time we talk about some awesome facts you may not know about the Merc with a Mouth. Some of these facts will be better known than others, but my goal is to give you a bit of an insight into the man that is Deadpool. So sit back, and enjoy the ride!
1. He’s a Knock-Off of Deathstroke
Deadpool was developed in the late 90s and it was very easy for certain fans to see the resemblances between Deathstroke and Deadpool. This becomes even more of an issue if you look at the names of both characters. Deadpool aka Wade Wilson, and Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson. The story behind this is the creators of Deadpool, Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, thought it would be fun to poke fun at Slade by implying that both characters were somehow related. This would make sense since Deadpool himself is known to break the fourth wall at times. Deadpool has even made it known he’s in on the inside joke.
2. Deadpool Loves Starwars, and will Kill for it!
If you’re a fan of the comics, then you’ve seen plenty of examples of Wade’s love for everything nerd. One that sticks out in my mind is a panel in which he shoots someone for simply preferring the prequel Star Wars films over the classic trilogy. This makes me wonder how he feels about The Last Jedi? All I know is that I’m a big Star Trek fan, and I’d be willing to debate him on the merits of each franchise. Though I doubt I’d make it out in one piece. Either way, Deadpool is committed to his fandom like any good fan, and he’ll bust a cap in you to prove it!
3. Breaker of the Fourth Wall.
One thing that I’ve enjoyed about reading Deadpool over the years is his ability to break the fourth wall. He does it in a way that is uniquely Deadpool, and either adds to the story or is just fun to read. Whether it’s him smarting off to a fellow hero about the last issue they saw one another or he asks the reader to call him a taxi. Deadpool’s fourth wall breaking abilities have even found itself in the film adaptation of the comics. Thankfully Ryan Reynolds is such a fan that he knows just how to break the wall without losing the Deadpool edge.
4. He Loves Gameboys.
Even in the heat of a battle, Wade knows that you got to make time for yourself. Though some of his partners would rather he work on his timing a bit. This doesn’t come up much, but Wade is a fan of Nintendo. As a lifelong buyer of their products, I cannot blame him. (Send me free stuff Nintendo!) In the panel below you see Deadpool and Cable in the midst of an epic battle. Here is where Deadpool decides it’s a good time to pop open his Gameboy and start mashing buttons. I can’t blame Cable for losing his cool there.
5. Wade has an unhealthy love for Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Ok, I wouldn’t call it full of love. But the two share a strange, yet deep friendship over the last ten plus years. In the past, both have met up, fought together, and even shared moments that I’d say are a bit awkward, to say the least. But regardless, Wade has a strange love/obsession with Peter. There are times when Parker will come to his home only to find it cleaned up for him with a nice note left by Deadpool saying he did his chores for him. I mean I wish I had someone come to my house and do that, I could deal with the strange maid outfit.
6. Bonus Fact. Wade Makes a Classic Reference to a World of Warcraft Meme!
Ok, I had to add this. As an avid player of World of Warcraft, it’s great to see it referenced in other mediums of entertainment. In one battle Wade makes a classic reference to a World of Warcraft event that happened many years ago and since has become something of a meme. As you see in the panel below, Wade charges into battle against a group of superhumans alone. Just like in the reference where the character didn’t want to wait for his group and charged into battle without them.
