DC is putting out a one-shot starring Joker this October to tie in with 2019’s “Year of the Villain” storyline and has recruited an elite duo to write it.
The publisher announced on their website the one-and-only John Carpenter and video-game writer Anthony Burch are handling duties. Carpenter proudly shared the announcement on Twitter Friday.

The director, known best for horror classics Halloween and The Thing, had this to say to DC:
“The Joker is the greatest villain in comics. I’m proud to be reunited with Anthony on this project.”
Co-writer Anthony Burch, who worked with Carpenter on a comic based on his 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China for BOOM! Studios, also expressed his excitement:
”I’m excited beyond words to be writing for Gotham’s greatest villain. I hope the Joker’s exploits make you laugh, shudder, and grow nauseous all at once.”
Burch’s video game credits include Borderlands 2 and League of Legends.
In the one-shot, called The Joker: Year of the Villain #1, the Clown Prince of Crime goes “on a mission to get his swagger back in a world gone bad by out-badding everyone else, proving that the greatest evil is always the one that leaves them laughing.”
John Carpenter’s Notable Screen Characters
To his legion of fans, John Carpenter is a man who needs no introduction. A director and producer of 40-plus years, he has created some of the most celebrated screen characters of all time: most notable are Michael Myers, Snake Pliskin, and Nada, Roddy Piper’s drifter-outlaw character in They Live.
Carpenter is also a writer and a talented composer. In recent years, he returned to the horror genre with well-received entries such as The Ward (as director) and 2018’s Halloween sequel/reboot (as producer).
Year of the Villain, the event, is dominated by Lex Luthor, now half-alien, making the appeal to give in to evil and “embrace doom” in exchange for the tools to make humanity its ultimate self.
Joker’s Year of the Villain tie-in will come out in October, just in time for Todd Phillips’ dark and distinct turn for the character in Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Phillips promises his film won’t follow any comics.
