Ant-Man and The Wasp star Evangeline Lilly hinted at a different version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers 4.

Her comments echo Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige’s who told Vanity Fair that Avengers 4 would “bring things you’ve never seen in superhero films: a finale.” Feige also said, “There will be two distinct periods. Everything, before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting.”

Well, Evangeline Lilly elaborated on how different the Marvel Cinematic Universe will look following Avengers 4 in Vanity Fair’s Holiday Issue. Lilly talked about what Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige has planned reminded her a lot about her time on Lost.

When I heard about Infinity War and the direction that they’re heading, I did have this moment of realizing, oh, wow, there’s a bit of a déjà vu for me with the Lost franchise,… We are hitting that [Lost] Season 4 space where everything’s about to shift, and you’re about to lose the solid ground underneath you. And [Ant-Man and the Wasp], of course, will play a part in that.

Wow, that’s pretty strong. Seeing an entire cinematic universe, especially one as large as Marvel, willing to pivot like that is astounding. It’s risky, but it sounds like a sure way to keep the whole universe fresh for fans. In fact, Kevin Feige revealed Marvel has 20 more movies currently planned after Avengers 4. This major shift in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will most likely be Marvel’s way of laying down the groundwork for the coming years.

Evangeline Lilly knows that the risks are present with an undertaking this big, but she shares her faith in Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, but also hinted that a number of Marvel’s mainstay characters will be dying.

Frankly, if it wasn’t Kevin at the helm, I think I would be very, very nervous to be losing these pillars and the people who paved a way for characters like the Wasp.

When he walked me through the general story arc of Infinity War, it dawned on me: oh, I understand now, we’re moving into this new Phase. The color of that new Phase can be clearly seen emerging through Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor: Ragnarok. It’s just a more colorful, more playful, heightened reality that we’re going to enter.

While Evangeline Lilly describes a more playful cinematic universe in the tone of Thor: Ragnarok, the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer paints a rather different picture. The tone is dark and ominous as Thanos seems to be nigh unstoppable. It’s possible out the darkness will emerge light, with new Marvel heroes taking center stage.
