Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo played with our emotions leading up to Avengers: Infinity War. In one interview, they would tell us Captain Marvel would be showing up in the film, and in another they were saying she wasn’t showing up.
Well, Captain Marvel didn’t technically show up in Avengers: Infinity War, but the directors did allude to her in the post-credit scene. Now, the directing duo revealed exactly why they decided to leave Captain Marvel out of the film as well as why they added the post-credit scene alluding to her.
They spoke on the Happy Sad Podcast and answered whether they actually planned to put her in the film.
“No, we want to save her reveal,” said Joe Russo. His brother Anthony Russo would add, “We also wanted to, it was very important to us to commit… we wanted to commit to this ending very hard. We didn’t want to go past the ending very much.”
Joe Russo would chime in, “And we considered not doing any tags for that reason.” Finally, he revealed why the post-credit scene featuring Captain Marvel was added, “Then we thought maybe it was too brutal. Everything’s about trying to find balance.”
Brie Larson, who will play Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, will make her debut in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain Marvel film in March of next year. As for what exactly her role will be in Avengers 4, the Russo brothers were keeping those secrets close to the chest.
“I mean, all of these characters are. It’s hard to talk about the next one. We’re going to try to protect the secrets of that one the same way that we did on this one,” said Joe Russo. Anthony added, “She will be a part of the MCU at that point and part of the promise of these movies is that they are a road forward for all the films.”
