Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo attended a UK Fan Event at Television Studios White City in London, United Kingdom over the weekend. They took questions while at the event and provided some more details on what we can expect.

Joe Russo said, “They can expect a lot. There’s going to be a lot of surprises in the film. It’s the first time they are going to see all of their favorite characters together in one movie. They are going up against the worst villain they’ve ever faced and it’s going to take a lot to beat him.”

He succinctly summarized the battle between the Avengers and their superhero allies against Thanos and what is actually at stake if they fail to defeat him, “[Thanos] wants something that’s in direct conflict to what they want. Meaning, he wants to destroy half the universe to bring balance to it. And the heroes are out protecting life. Someone is going to win and someone is going to lose.”

Joe Russo would go on to talk about his passion for the stories and the characters, “I think it’s really important because when you love something as a child and it has a strong emotional impact on you, that sticks with you for the rest of your life. We are very passionate about these characters. We are passionate about these stories. We understand them and we understand the mythology behind them and we want to tell the best story we can.”

Joe would go on to talk about how he balances different tones in the film, “It’s always the approach with us to balance. You want to make sure there is humor in there when there is heartbreak. You want to make sure that there’s intensity and heroism. That the whole thing works together in concert with each other. Nothing really overshadows the storytelling or the characters.”

Anthony Russo would reiterate his brother’s statement, “It’s hard, but everybody involved knows the story drives everything. It’s really about what’s the best story that we can tell and how do we all serve that. But I will say this when you do get to the end of this film and you start to see the actor cards appear on screen, it just goes on and on and on.”

Avengers: Infinity War comes to theaters on April 27, 2018.
