Batman Actor Robert Pattinson Retracts Undisclosed Comments About Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker

The two biggest things in Hollywood related to DC at the moment are Joker and The Batman. That seems to be the case every ten or twenty years but for the first time, the two aren’t connected. Joker, out in October, is a standalone film meant to exist outside any continuity and The Batman, out in 2021, is a fresh start for a character who couldn’t spin off successfully from Zack Snyder’s films.

A crossover might not be out of the question, though, as long as plans remain fluid. If they concern new star and Bruce Wayne Robert Pattinson is anybody’s guess. (Related: Robert Pattinson Shows Off His Batman Voice — Says ‘I’m Batman’)

In a recent interview with Variety, Pattinson admitted he is unsure his stint as the Dark Knight entails more than one movie.

“I don’t know anything. I’ve got an idea how to do about four scenes, and then I’m working on the rest gradually.”

After that Joker star Joaquin Phoenix came up and Pattinson made a comment he felt the need to retract. What he said, the piece does not say. If it was actually confidential or a juicy tidbit regarding DC movies going forward, we don’t know. Variety described it as a “mundane comment about Joaquin Phoenix.”

Pattinson’s words that were published are rather oblique. After his comment regarding Phoenix, he exclaimed, “Oh sh—.” He then added:

“I definitely should not say that. I’m so used to pretty art-house movies, where you can watch the movie three times and still not know what it’s about.”

Pattinson’s statement funnily mirrors one by supporting Joker cast member Marc Maron. On Conan, Maron joked he has to go to a theater out of his way to see a grown-up movie where no one understands the ending. “Now I gotta go travel 15-20 minutes to a smaller movie theater to see a grown-up movie with other grown-ups where we can all sit together and not understand the ending?”

Spoilers Ahead

Pattinson added movie spoilers aren’t usually something he has to worry about on his sets. He hasn’t actually seen Joker so what spoilers he is talking about remain a mystery.

Joker spoilers are floating around that could’ve leaked the entire plot but director Todd Phillips says moviegoers will be in for surprises. He told the AP the script the spoilers came from is outdated and according to star Zazie Beetz the script was rewritten constantly during filming. Spontaneity during scenes was common, noted Phillips, who mentioned Phoenix brought energy all his own. (Related: Todd Phillips is Open to a Joker Sequel with Joaquin Phoenix)

For now, Warner Bros. appears content to keep Joker and Batman separate. Joker, again, is out next month and Robert Pattinson suits up as the Caped Crusader June 25, 2021.

What could Robert Pattinson have said that jumped the gun? Do you think he has dirt on Phoenix’s Joker? Leave a comment.
