Will He Or Won’t He?
The speculation regarding Ben Affleck’s future as Batman has been lively for the last few months. Despite its’ recent successes, the trouble Warner Bro’s has had with the DCEU fuels these rumors. With the DC Universe’s future in question it’s no surprise that its’ most successful filmmaker has been considered up in the air. Those rumors were stomped at San Diego Comic Con, but recently Casey Affleck once again awoke the embers.
Representatives of both Afflecks contacted Buzzfeed News clarifying and settling the story. Casey’s representative asserts that he was, “having fun with the guys at the Red Sox game.” Then Ben’s representative reiterates that, “he’ll continue to be Batman as long as the studio will have him.”
A Sigh Of Relief
The statement is definitive, but it won’t stop this story from reappearing. Nothing other than a poster for Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Ben Affleck will make this story go away. Ever since Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’s 2016 release, Affleck’s participation has been in constant question, a surprise to no one. He’s spent a decade re-building his career by making excellent film after excellent film. Starting with the Casey Affleck-led Gone Baby Gone, Ben has wow’d audiences and critics with his directorial efforts.
His directing is a pleasant surprise, but a string of scene-stealing performances put the actor back on the A-list. Gone Girl was an intense and effective collaboration with David Fincher; To The Wonder was Robert Ebert’s last perfect review. His come back was a tour de force effort on all fronts. Though he’s the highlight, it can’t have been easy seeing BvS tank with critics and stop short of Box Office expectations.
As Reeves ramps up and begins pre-production, expectations for his take on Ben Affleck’s The Batman will remain astronomical. The two are some of Hollywood’s best filmmakers. Literally no one can wait to see what these masterminds come up with.
