Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, and Tom Hiddleston took to Good Morning America on Monday to discuss Avengers: Infinity War. While Tom Holland revealed a small spoiler about the upcoming film, the real meat came from his co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange.
“I’m really stressed right now because this is live, so I’m just trying to sit on it and let these guys do all the talking.” – notorious secret-spiller @TomHolland1996 on @Avengers: #InfinityWar.

When Michael Strahan asked about who had read the full script of Avengers: Infinity War, only Benedict Cumberbatch rose his hand. He responded, “I like to read. I have special reading powers.” He added, “I had to sort of understand what the context was. Strange has this wonderful role in it. I’m trying to hold the Multiverse together. I kind of needed to know what goes on in between those brackets.”
It’s highly interesting he brings up the Multiverse. The concept isn’t new to anyone who is a fan of the comics, but it was recently introduced to the Marvel Universe in Doctor Strange. The idea of a multiverse is somewhat simple, a number of other properties incorporate them. Basically, there are other universes that are similar in nature to the prime universe. They might have their own Avengers that look very similar to the prime universe ones or they could be completely different. As an example Steve Rogers could be working for Hydra in an alternative universe instead of fighting against them. Or Peggy Carter might actually be Captain America.
The idea of the Multiverse opens up a number of different storytelling possibilities. It could easily allow the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the pending Disney and Fox merger. However, we’ve theorized this could already be happening as Disney and Fox are already collaborating on a number of projects including The Gifted and Legion, which both feature X-Men characters. It also appears Marvel and Fox will also be introducing the Skrulls in their upcoming films. Jessica Chastain’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix character is highly rumored to be a Skrull and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed the Skrulls are the primary antagonists in next year’s Captain Marvel.
The Multiverse also leaves open the possibility of actors returning to play roles of previously believed dead characters. It gives Marvel Studios an out to reintroduce Tom Hiddleston’s Loki if Thanos kills him in Avengers: Infinity War.
But more importantly, the fact that the Marvel Studios Multiverse is under attack can also mean the reintroduction of Dormammu as a primary Doctor Strange villain. One can also assume that Thanos will get his hands on the Reality Stone.
It could also mean there are multiple Infinity Gauntlets operating in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy can get their hand on an Infinity Gauntlet from an alternate universe, they might just stand a chance against Thanos and his Black Order.
What other implications or theories do you have about the Marvel Studios Multiverse?
Avengers: Infinity War comes to theaters on April 27, 2018.
