**Warning Spoilers for Captain Marvel Below**
If you’ve seen any promotional material for Captain Marvel, you know that Nick Fury has both of his eyes in tact. So it was safe to assume that Fury would be losing his eye given he doesn’t have it in Iron Man and all of the other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies going forward.
Well, how Fury actually loses his eye is completely underwhelming. It doesn’t happen during a fight. It doesn’t happen during a crazy chase sequence. It’s not badass at all.
While escaping an attack from the Kree, Fury is sitting with the alien Flerken Goose in his lap. Goose looks like a cat. The cat decides to scratch him in his left eye. That’s it. That’s how Fury loses his eye. An alien species that looks like a cat scratches him.
It’s more than likely Marvel was trying to make this a funny moment. But it fell completely flat. It was not funny at all and was more of a disservice to Nick Fury and the mystique that has been built up around him in the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Fury isn’t the guy who gets scratched by a cat. He loses his eye in heroics for his country or for the world. That’s who he is.
And there was a moment in the film that would have been perfect for Fury to lose his eye. In fact, Marvel even teases with the audience, hinting that this moment might be where he loses his eye.
After Carol Danvers crash lands on Earth, Fury is the first S.H.I.E.L.D. agent on the scene and begins questioning Carol. However, their conversation is interrupted when a Skull attacks. A chase scene ensues with Carol chasing the Skrull onto a Los Angeles train while Fury pursues in his undercover vehicle with Coulson. However, Fury quickly discovers the Coulson sitting next to him is not the real Coulson. It’s actually a Skrull. Upon discovering an alien invader is sitting next to him, a struggle ensues. Fury loses control of the vehicle during the struggle and the vehicle crashes.
The impact of the crash kills the Skrull, and Fury comes out with a some bumps, bruises, and some cuts around his eyes. He’s even asked if his eye is okay. It is. This would have been the perfect opportunity for Fury to have lost his eye.
Regardless, this entire point appears to be a significant retcon from Captain America: Winter Soldier, where Fury insinuated that he lost his eye on a mission rescuing Alexander Pierce’s kidnapped daughter.
What do you make of how Nick Fury loses his eye?
