If you’ve been a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you know it was Nick Fury who came up with the idea of the Avengers Initiative. Fury explains it in [easyazon_link identifier=”B009GEEMLY” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]The Avengers[/easyazon_link] after Loki kills Agent Phil Coulson.
Fury explains The Avengers Initiative:
“There was an idea, Stark knows this, called The Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to. To fight the battles we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea. In heroes. Well, it’s an old-fashioned option.”
But how Nick Fury came up with the name of the Avengers was still a mystery. Well, it’s a mystery no more. The idea for the name was revealed in Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.
While Nick Fury is beginning to write up his idea for the Avengers Initiative, he looks at an old photo of Carol Danvers as she is about to take off on a test flight and discovers that her call sign is Avenger.
On the side of her plane it reads, “Carol ‘Avenger’ Danvers.”
Thus the Captain Marvel film insinuates that Carol Danvers is the inspiration for the idea of the Avengers Initiative. Fury had originally titled his paper The Defenders Protocol.
