Casino Royale actress Eva Green, who played Vesper Lynd, recently addressed the ongoing James Bond gender controversy.
Eva Green spoke with Vanity Fair at Disney’s Dumbo premiere to state that James Bond should remain a man.
“I’m for women, but I really think James Bond should remain a man. It doesn’t make sense for him to be a woman.”
She would add:
“Women can play different types of characters, be in action movies and be superheroes, but James Bond should always be a man and not be Jane Bond. There is history with the character that should continue. He should be played by a man.”
Green would go on to discuss the evolution of Bond girls and how she was initially nervous about playing a Bond girl, but fell in love with playing Vesper Lynd.
“I love the fact that the Bond girls have evolved. I originally had reservations about being a Bond girl. I didn’t want to be a bimbo. The women are now perceived differently. They are intelligent and sassy and fascinating. I loved playing Vesper. She’s the only one to get to Bond’s heart and has a big impact on his life.”
Eva Green isn’t the only actress to want James Bond to remain a man. Actress Rachel Weisz, who also happens to be married to current James Bond actor Daniel Craig, echoed very similar feelings last year.
Weisz points out how writer Ian Fleming wrote the character and even suggests the Bond franchise can create new female characters instead of co-opting James Bond.
“Fleming] devoted an awful lot of time to writing this particular character, who is particularly male and relates in a particular way to women. Why not create your own story rather than jumping on to the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors? Women are really fascinating and interesting and should get their own stories.”
Bond producer Barbara Broccoli made it clear Bond would remain a male for the foreseeable future while speaking with The Guardians in October of last year.
“Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as male.”
Daniel Craig is expected to finish his role as James Bond in the next movie that is expected to hit theaters next year.
There have been plenty of rumors swirling on who could become the next James Bond with many involving Idris Elba. Although, Elba seems resigned to the fact he won’t be James Bond. The most recent rumors indicate Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy could be the top runner. There has also been a push for transgender actor Dominic West to become James Bond.
Idris Elba and even Thor actor Chris Hemsworth have suggested that there could be a female James Bond.
The next James Bond movie hits theaters on April 8, 2020.
