Sony Pictures released a first look at the Elizabeth Banks directed Charlie’s Angels.
The stills which come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly show off Kristen Stewart’s Sabina Wilson described as a “hard-partying, highly skilled wild card, Ella Balinska’s Jane Kano described as “the ex-MI6 muscle of the group”, and Naomi Scott’s Elena Houghlin, who is an “MIT trained scientist.”
Take a look:
Banks describes the upcoming Charlie’s Angels movie as a “continuation” of the 1970s Charlie’s Angels TV series as well as the films from the 2000s. In fact, Banks notes, “Charles Townsend is richer than ever, so he’s grown the business into a global spy agency.” And Banks means global as the Angels will make stop in Istanbul, Hamburg, and Berlin.
And as for the continuation factor, Banks discussed just who would be the voice of Charlie, “The voice will sound very familiar to you. We tried to emulate John Forsythe’s voice as best as we could. We want a real sense of continuity in the movie.”
Banks indicates the movie is about the teamwork of the Angels, “It was important to me to make a movie about women working together and supporting each other, and not make a movie about their romantic entanglements or their mother they don’t call enough.” She adds, “When I’m at work, I don’t talk about those things. I get on with my job. It felt important to do that for the Angels, to treat them with the respect their skill set demands.”
Banks describes the scene above as a Turkish derby, where the Angels are pursuing a target until “chaos ensues, as it always does.” She also noted she wanted to ground the film’s action scenes, “I wanted to make them distinct from superheroes, aliens, and mythological creatures that are in a lot of action movies now.”
Banks will team-up once again with Naomi Scott. The two were co-stars in the Power Ranges film back in 2017. Bank described Scott’s Elana as “somebody who I felt the audience wants to root for.” She adds, “She’s getting to be this Everywoman who’s also very fun and very funny.”
As for Noah Centineo’s character, Banks didn’t want to give too much away, but she did state, “he’s a friend mostly to Naomi’s character.”
While Banks is directing the film, she’s also starring in it. She will be playing one of three characters named Bosley. The other two are played by Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou. Banks explained why she decided to upgrade the name into a title, “‘Bosley’ is now a rank in the organization, like lieutenants.” She continues, “All of the Angels have been played by different women and have had different names, but the Bosley character was always named Bosley no matter who played him. We thought, ‘Well, that must mean it’s more than a name.’”
