Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War star Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, hinted the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 film might take place in the past.

Pratt spoke to MTV during last night’s MTV Movie and TV Awards where he did his best to dodge questions about Avengers 4 as well as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

He began by joking that the Blue Man Group has been cast for the film and even made an Andy Griffith reference.

“No, they’ve cast the Blue Man Group. It’s gonna be all Blue Man Group. I, ugh, I’m not supposed to say anything. Oh no! Now, everyone’s gonna be mad. It’s the Blue Man Group. It’s an Andy Griffith hologram. Yea. They’re the new Guardians.”

However, when pressed on the story and asked about the mourning of Gamora, Pratt hinted the film could actually be a prequel.

“You don’t know. It might take place in the past. You don’t know. It might be a a prequel.”

Pratt would then clarify he wasn’t going to answer any of the questions seriously.

Do you think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be a prequel film? It would explain Zoe Saldanna’s Gamora returning after she was killed by Thanos. It would also allow most of the Guardians to return as well including Pratt’s Star-Lord who was dusted by Thanos.

Marvel Studios is already exploring films that will take place in the past. Captain Marvel has already been confirmed to take place in the 1990s. There’s also talk that the upcoming Black Widow solo film might also take place in the past.

In fact, Ant-Man and The Wasp executive producer Steven Broussard explained the film will actually be taking place in the past as well. It won’t be as far back as the 1990s, but it does take place before the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does take place in the past, there’s plenty of time for director James Gunn to explore and the reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s cosmic world are open to the imagination. Who knows what kind of deep space threats are lurking out there that the Guardians could come face to face with.
