A pretty significant rumor about Aquaman began circulating yesterday that explained Dolph Lundgren’s King Nereus would be Amber Heard’s Mera’s father.
It’s a drastic change from the the comic books where Mera and King Nereus were actually betrothed to each other.
However, it’s no longer a rumor. Dolph Lundgren, who plays King Nereus, spoke to the Las Vegas Review-Journal to confirm the rumor.
“It is good to be king. Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along with Amber Heard, who plays my daughter. She’s trying to convince me to join the right side.”
Not only does he confirm the rumor, he also goes on to reveal some significant plot details and how King Nereus fits into the middle of them.
“Then you have Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother. We’re trying to avoid war between the surface dwells and the people of Atlantis.”
Avoiding war between the surface dwellers and the people of Atlantis is a major theme in a number of Aquaman comics. Current Aquaman writer Dan Abnett recently introduced the Nautical Enforcement of Macrocosmic Order (N.E.M.O.) that stoked a war between Atlantis and the surface. Fortunately, Aquaman was able to stop the war between the United States and Atlantis before it escalated any further.
It’s quite possible a similar scenario might occur, but instead of N.E.M.O stoking the war, it might be Aquaman’s brother Orm or Ocean Master played by Patrick Wilson. Director James Wan recently revealed he’s the story primary antagonist, so it’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination to see him begin marshaling the forces of Atlantis to destroy the surface dwellers for an as of yet slight to the people of Atlantis.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Atlantis experience a mini civil war, much like we just saw in Black Panther. On one side you have Ocean Master and on the other is Aquaman, Mera, King Nereus, and Nicole Kidman’s Atlanna.
Kidman revealed she actually filmed a scene where she lies on a rock with her hair strewn and bloody. It’s possible her death could spark the civil war or she might even be faking her death in order to cause a struggle between Aquaman and Ocean Master and prevent an invasion of the surface.
We’ll definitely find out more as we get closer to Aquaman’s release date on December 21, 2018.
