Dragon Ball Super: Broly creators Computer Graphics Producer Yuuji Yoko’o, Computer Graphics Director Kai Makino, and Computer Graphics Line Producer Takuya Fukunaga recently did an interview on the official Dragon Ball site where they teased an absolutely epic battleground fight sequence that will use computer graphics.
Twitter user Todd Blankenship translated the interview confirming this epic battleground sequence “could only have been realized with CG. It’s not just another boring wasteland.”
In fact, this new battleground “will be a highlight of the movie (they say). It’s a type of place that doesn’t exist in reality, like an alternate dimension, and they created it with software Unity.”
Take a look at Todd’s translation:
The Official DB Site has an interview with CG Producer Yuuji Yoko’o, CG Director Kai Makino, and CG Line Producer Takuya Fukunaga. They say Shintani have many corrections on the CG models, and even Toriyama looked them over (the first time he’s done this): https://t.co/3JbSn0F72F pic.twitter.com/tfP30lPqkr

Nagamine wanted them to take full advantage of CG for the film. The battles take place in many different locations, one of which could only have been realized with CG. It’s not just another boring wasteland.

Since the characters have different transformations, this requires different CG models for each one. Broly in particular changes form gradually throughout the movie, with each increment requiring a separate model. Add in separate models for battle damaged clothes and it adds up.

They look at the old movies for reference, but replicating something from traditional animation with CG isn’t always a straightforward process. Nagamine says they don’t need to match it up precisely with the old stuff; just follow the spirit and do whatever works best with CG.

The above-mentioned battleground that could only be made with CG will be a highlight of the movie (they say). It’s a type of place that doesn’t exist in reality, like an alternate dimension, and they created it with the software Unity.

Nagamine told them to just do whatever they wanted (a running theme in these interviews), so they challenged themselves to create something people have never seen before.

Despite the freedom Nagamine gave them, there are still traditionally animated battles both before and after the CG sequence, so they can’t literally do whatever they want. This being DB and all, they’re heavily focused on keeping the pace up during the CG battle sequence.

Makino isn’t big on games, but he likes FighterZ. He and Fukunaga are impressed by the game’s CG models with their strong anime vibe. But they’ve got to do an even better job! (laughs)

It’s also very interesting that they have actually looked at Dragon Ball FighterZ’s animation and want to outdo it for this intense battle sequence.
Given the trailer already teased a number of epic Broly battles where he takes on Vegeta, Frieza, and Goku, one can only imagine just how epic this CG animated battleground sequence will be. Plus the fact that it appears to be in an alternate dimension makes it sound even more interesting.
Are you excited about the addition of CG animation to Dragon Ball Super: Broly? What do you think will happen in this epic fight?
Dragon Ball Super: Broly arrives in Japan on December 19, 2018 and it is expected to hit theaters in the United States in January 2019.
