Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Announces Black Adam Release Date

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to Instagram to announce the release date of Black Adam.

Not only did he announce the release date, but he shared just why he is so passionate to play Black Adam.

The Rock wrote:

“The Man in Black ⚡️

Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people. It all changed for me, when I was 10yrs old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time – SUPERMAN.

As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be.”

He continued:

“I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority. Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart – I just liked to do things my way.

Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid – my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to joined the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM.”

Johnson goes on to provide some details on Black Adam:

“BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way.”

The Rock adds, “This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.”

He then announces the release date will be December 22, 2021 and thanks both Jim Lee and Boss Logic for the collaboration image of The Rock as Black Adam.

While the release date is definitely exciting, what might be more interesting about this announcement is that The Rock defines Black Adam as a superhero. This is in contrast to his previous discussions about the character.

In July, he revealed his character would actually start off as a villain before becoming an anti-hero. He did tease he might become a hero though.

“Black Adam, how he starts, he starts off as a villain. Then, he becomes an anti-hero. And then he might become a hero or we might not.”

DC Comics fans know Black Adam is primarily an antagonist towards Shazam! aka Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family. He was created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck and first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ The Marvel Family #1 back in 1945.

He was originally a predecessor to Captain Marvel first inhabiting the powers of Shazam. However, he believed he should rule and overthrew the Egyptian Pharaoh. The Wizard Shazam intervenes and casts Black Adam to the furthest star in the universe. He spends the next 5,000 years making his way back to Earth.

The character would be reformed and act more as an anti-hero even joining the Justice Society of America. However, after a disagreement he leaves the JSA and creates his own superhero team that metes out his own version of justice.
