The story has seen Godzilla force humanity and their alien allies to flee Earth in search of a new home. However, their search is futile, and they are forced to return to Earth only to discover millennia have passed. Earth is no longer the way they left it. It has adapted itself to Godzilla, who is now the supreme ruler. The fate of humanity rests in destroying the giant monster and what little forces humanity has left muster to take down the giant behemoth. They are eventually successful, but discover their initial target was not the original Godzilla.
In City on the Edge of Battle, the survivors of the battle against the offspring of Godzilla encounter an indigenous tribe who have adapted and survived in the millennia since humanity fled the planet. These people lead the survivors to a city created by nanometal that was left over after Godzilla had supposedly destroyed Mechagodzilla. The metal had slowly been taking over parts of the world cloaking itself from Godzilla. The humans led by a man named Haruo team up with the Galu-Gu tribe in order to use the city to defeat Godzilla. However, in order to do so the tribe attempts to fuse with the city to become greater than humanity. The city also threatens to consume the entire planet. Haruo is left with a dire choice of two major threats in the Mechagodzilla City and Godzilla. He eventually chooses to destroy the city allowing Godzilla to destroy it.
The third installment will see King Ghidorah face off against Godzilla. Ghidorah was briefly mentioned in a post-credits scene in Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle when one of Haruo’s alien allies Metphies reveals his planet was destroyed by Ghidorah.
Toho Animation has also released a teaser clip for the film:
