Star Wars: The Last Jedi had a few misses to say the least. One notable miss was how Rian Johnson revealed who Rey’s parents were. Her parentage was probably the most talked about mystery following Star Wars: The Force Awakens and leading up to The Last Jedi. We even had our own theory that she might be a clone of LukeSkywalker. However, what we got from Rian Johnson and Lucasfilm was that Rey’s parents were nobodies. It felt pretty underwhelming. In fact, it even seems Johnson succumbed to the fan pressure when he began backtracking about her parents on a post-The Last Jedi press tour.
And now the latest news about Rey’s parents shows J.J. Abrams had a very different idea of who they would be. MTV’s Josh Horowitz tweeted out a comment by Simon Pegg:
Simon Pegg confirms what I’ve long heard, JJ had a much different plan for Rey’s parentage. “I know what JJ kind of intended or at least was being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by the last one. There was some talk of a relevant lineage for her.” https://t.co/AksaUK35PQ

J.J. Abrams definitely has quite a large task ahead of him for Episode IX given what Johnson did in The Last Jedi. The mystery of Rey’s parents is gone. Supreme Leader Snoke has been cut in half. Admiral Ackbar is dead. We can only assume Luke Skywalker has become one with the Force. A lot of possibilities for character exploration has been either lost or severely limited.

There is some hope though. The Knights of Ren are still in play and Rey’s parentage is something that can be reworked and made interesting with some creative writing from J.J. Abrams and the Lucasfilm story group.

Even if J.J. Abrams does touch up Rey’s parental issues in the next film, he has a lot to clean up in one movie and it might be too much for just a single movie.
The Last Jedi has left J.J. Abrams with plenty of work ahead of him. But there is reason to be somewhat excited. John Boyega promised us that this next film will be “all out war.”
