Not too long ago, Jared Leto made his displeasure clear when it came to light he wouldn’t be playing the Joker in the stand-alone film. It seems, that his future as one of Batman’s greatest foes might be in greater doubt.
We first saw the veteran actor take on the role of the Joker in the first Suicide Squad film. Though the role wasn’t as major as say, Harley Quinn, it left one heck of an impact. Some good and some bad. This mixed reaction was to be expected, especially since the last time the Joker was on film was with Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning take on the character. Needless to say Jared Leto had some pretty big pants to fill.
Speaking with Collider, Jared Leto opened up about the future of the role and how he feels about Director Gavin O’Connor directing the Suicide Squad sequel.
On one note, Gavin O’Connor has his approval:
I think Gavin is incredibly talented, he seems to be the perfect director for Suicide Squad 2. I think he’s a really gifted filmmaker and I really love his work.
This is good news for us who are looking forward to the next Suicide Squad movie. But for many viewers, the first didn’t hit the mark as well as it could have. However, its success at the box office shows that there is a market for the misfits of the DC universe.
While, Leto praised O’Connor as a director, he wasn’t sure of his continued role as the Joker. Jared Leto used his words carefully:
A lot of moving parts, we’ll see what happens.
Not to get lost in the weeds, it’s obvious that the ball is in Warner Bros. court. I can’t blame him for being a bit distant with the answers. Having two different actors playing the Joker over multiple movies is a bit odd. As for Leto, it could also signal in his mind, the studio isn’t completely confident in his portrayal. Leto also has an extremely busy schedule outside of acting. He’s the lead singer of alternative rock Thirty Seconds to Mars and has a busy tour date. Leto is also being courted to by Valiant Entertainment to take on the lead role in their upcoming Bloodshot movie.
What do you think? Are Jared Leto’s days as the Joker numbered? Or, is this just studio miscommunication gone amok. Let us know what you think below in the comments!
