Jason Momoa Confirms He’s Pitched Aquaman 2 Story Ideas – Director James Wan Hints at Potential Spin-Off Ideas!

Aquaman actor Jason Momoa is rather confident in the upcoming Warner Bros. film that he’s already pitched studio executives on ideas he has for a sequel.

In the November issue of Total Film magazine Momoa discussed how he already pitched a number of ideas and how Warner Bros. executives reacted to those ideas.

“I definitely have an opinion. Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. Its awesome… But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.”

James Wan Weighs In

Momoa isn’t the only one who’s already talking a sequel for Aquaman. Director James Wan noted that he doesn’t want to jinx the upcoming film by talking about a sequel, but he went on record to indicate there are already stories from the upcoming film that can lead into a sequel.

“There’s definitely stories, even within the world we’ve created, that you can actually see other storylines [spinning off from] as well. There’s the Aquaman story, but then there’s the stories of the seven different kingdoms as well. I think those would be very fun to explore.”

That doesn’t just sound like sequel talk to me. That sounds like Wan has ideas for potential spin-off films within the Aquaman world he has fleshed out.

The Worlds of Aquaman

Actor Jason Momoa previously commented on the worlds Wan has built for Aquaman:

“He’s just a total visionary, man. I mean, just his films alone. But, his worlds, what he’s built, like, the layouts, I’m sure you went to the war room and saw-I mean, when you see us go against the Trench people, that’s gonna be insane.”

Wan himself talked about the vastness of the world he created:

“I didn’t set out to make a horror movie. I mean, that’s not what this is about. It just so happens that you’re dealing with … you’re dealing in a world that is beautiful, magical, but at the same time, scary as well, right? People are terrified of the ocean because they don’t know what’s down there. There are all these creatures that live down in the ocean that are dangerous to humans.”

He added:

“I want to capture the fear that we have of the ocean, the scariness, but at the same time, the magical and wonder that comes with it as well. The ocean’s such a beautiful place and so just naturally built into the story … my story for this film. Our heroes goes on this rite of passage journey, this quest, and on the way, they meet all sorts of fun creatures of the deep, let’s say. Creatures of the deep that love craft wood beer.”

Depending on how Aquaman does in theaters it’s possible we might not only get a sequel film, but there might also be spin-offs. I can already think that there could be possibilities with a Black Manta solo film as well as a Mera solo film. Who knows maybe we even get a Commander Murk solo film that turns out to be a true horror film as he leads a platoon into the world of the Trench!

We’ll find out how truly promising these worlds that James Wan has created are when Aquaman comes to theaters on December 21, 2018.
