Justice League Dark Faces New Setback – Script Getting Rewritten

Justice League Dark faces a new setback as the studio plans to rework the script.

Variety’s Justin Kroll reports the studio will be reworking the script after a number of underwhelming director presentations.

This isn’t the first setback for the film. Originally titled Dark Universe, Guillermo del Toro was attached to the project. However, he left back in 2015 because it conflicted with Pacific Rim 2 which he was also set to direct.

After losing del Toro, Warner Bros. secured Doug Liman to helm the project. However, he left the movie earlier this year stating the script didn’t get to a “place that was special enough” for him.

There were rumors that It director Andy Muschietti was the frontrunner for the project. However, with the script being reworked, the film may be quite a ways off from a directorial announcement.

Warner Bros. did just release a Justice League Dark animated film this year. The film was based off the DC Comics team created by Peter Milligan and Mikel Janin. The comics team featured John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, and Zatanna among others. However, in the movie the team featured Constantine, Zatanna, Jason Blood, Etrigan the Demon, Deadman, and Black Orchid with the assistance of Swamp Thing. They fight off a powerful sorcerer in Destiny who possesses the magical artifact known as the Dreamstone.

Justice League Dark is a recent comics creation only first appearing in 2011 during DC’s New 52 relaunch. The book lasted only 40 issues officially ending in 2015. The lack of comic book source material might be hindering the strength of the script. However, the team has some of DC’s richest characters including Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan the Demon, and John Constantine. There is plenty of source material they could pull from those characters’ stories separate from Justice League Dark.
