Kevin Feige Reveals the First Superhero Nick Fury Encountered

Kevin Feige’s wide ranging interview with Entertainment Weekly has given us a ton of information. We’ve learned about Thanos’ character in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, we got an update on the X-Men  and Fantastic Four, and he also confirmed when people die in Avengers: Infinity War they are going to stay dead. And now we are getting information about one of Marvel’s upcoming movies Captain Marvel.

Feige had previously revealed Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s and will feature the Skrulls as villains. But now Feige has just revealed that Captain Marvel is actually the first superhero Nick Fury ever encountered and it even ties into the post-credit scene from Iron Man.

Feige explains:

“We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, ‘You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.’ Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel.”

As far as what Feige is talking about when it comes to a 90s action film he references one of the greatest films of all time, Terminator 2.

“Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements Terminator 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that.”

However, it might not be as straight forward as that. Feige reveals much of Captain Marvel will actually take place in space.

“That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.”

With Captain Marvel being the first superhero Nick Fury has ever met, it’s quite possible we will see her show up in Avengers: Infinity War. In fact there is big theory that Marvel has already hinted at her involvement in the film by showing her in the Avengers: Infinity War Super Bowl TV spot.

The theory goes that Captain Marvel is standing behind Captain America and next to Vision in the photo above. If you look closely it does appear to be Captain Marvel’s traditional colors of Red, Gold, and Blue.

What do you think? Is that Captain Marvel standing behind Captain America or could it be Doctor Strange or even Scarlet Witch? What do you think? Will we see Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War?

Avengers: Infinity War comes out April 27 and Captain Marvel is scheduled to hit theaters on March 6, 2019.
