Kevin Smith Speculates Nathan Fillion Could Be Green Lantern in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

The cast for The Suicide Squad was announced in the last week, confirming the bulk of what has been reported so far. Even casting that was strictly rumor, such as John Cena, was verified. Nathan Fillion made the supersized list. However, a portion of the characters involved remains a mystery. As such, who Fillion will play is unrevealed. For all we know, it could be Booster Gold which there is a clamor for the Firefly and Castle actor addressed last year. (Related: Nathan Fillion Discusses Potential of Booster Gold Role!)

Kevin Smith has a few ideas of his own. He talked about Fillion, the Suicide Squad cast, and DC film continuity on the September 12th episode of his Fatman Beyond podcast.

First, Smith wonders who Fillion — a vet when it comes to James Gunn movies — will be in Suicide Squad. Then he postulates what direction the new DC Extended Universe could go under its new, looser continuity:

“So he’s going to be in Suicide Squad? Nathan Fillion. Who do you think he could be playing? Oh, my g-d, this is just, I don’t know sh-t. But let’s just play around, right, because it’s f’n fun. Suicide Squad. They’re f’n around with it, set in the DC Universe, ain’t nobody married to no more continuity and sh-t like that.”

Smith brings up Batman and says Fillion would be a “genius” choice for the Dark Knight, though he sees that as far-flung:

“You know, this guy’s Batman, and that ain’t Ben Affleck, and this guy’s the Joker, and that ain’t that person, what if Nathan Fillion is playing Batman? That would be f’n genius casting, man. I betcha it’s not that though.”

His co-host, Marc Bernardin, then reminds Smith Fillion already has a DC character on his resume he has yet to play in live-action:

“Or Green Lantern. Which he has actually played like nine times on the various animated movies.”

Impressed by that idea, Smith lets on it gels with an inside tidbit he heard, but didn’t specify:

“You might be on to something because based on a little information that I know from a f’n undetermined source, that would play.”

After that, Smith nerds out at Marc Bernardin’s aptitude for fan casting:

“Wow. Wow! I hadn’t even thought of that. F’, you always make a better movie. That makes me more excited for that movie. I think it’s going to be amazing.”

Inside Track

Kevin Smith continually teases viewers of his podcast with his inside knowledge about Warner Bros. studios’ DC happenings. A month ago, he confirmed, based on testimony from crew he spoke with, the Snyder Cut of Justice League is real although incomplete. In relation to James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, in June, Smith claimed on Fatman Beyond he heard who the villain of the piece is. Without spoiling anything, he expressed his excitement for whoever it is and what Gunn will do:

“I’m not gonna spill it, but if it is what I heard, it is f—king phenomenal. And boy is it in the right hands with James Gunn.”

The Suicide Squad begins production this month in Georgia before heading to Panama. It lands in theaters August 6, 2021.
