Avengers: Infinity War is still in theaters, it made $2.5 million this past weekend. One of the best parts of the film is how Thanos deals with god of mischief, Loki. Loki appears to be up to his normal ways as he announces the Hulk’s attack on Thanos in the hopes of the big green monster killing the Mad Titan. When that ploy fails, he appears to immediately change allegiances and offers his services to Thanos. However, Loki is actually attempting to slice Thanos’ throat with a magic dagger. The plan fails and Thanos chokes the life out of Loki.
For all intents and purposes he appears dead. But we’ve thought Loki was dead before in Thor: The Dark World. Could the wily magician still be alive and he just created a masterful illusion to fool Thanos?
Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appeared at ACE Comic Con in Seattle where he confirmed the fate of Loki and revealed when he knew what was going to happen.
“So, I’ve known about that scene for two years. I met with Marvel in May 2016, and they were actually telling me the story of Ragnarok with concept art and images. The Russos came in, and I introduced myself. So, all four of us sat down, and they said this is how Infinity War begins.”
He continues:
“My whole journey through making Thor: Ragnarok — I knew this was coming. By the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Loki has been accepted as Thor’s brother again.”
He then gets to the nitty gritty and discusses the scene in Avengers: Infinity War.
“When I came to shoot the scene in Infinity War, I think it’s very powerful he calls himself an Odinson, and that closes the whole journey of Loki and what he can do. It [Loki’s death] set the stakes up emotionally. It takes the stakes up dramatically. You know that Thanos is someone who’s more dangerous than anyone we’ve seen before.”
Based on those statements, it looks like Loki is truly dead and gone.
However, that hasn’t left a number of fans including myself dreaming up ways of how Loki could return. In fact, we have a pretty good indication that Hiddleston will be returning as Loki in Avengers 4 given leaked set photos. Although those set photos appear to be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past specifically just after the events of Loki’s invasion of Earth with the Chitauri army.
If the Avengers are able to somehow alter the past, they could prevent Thanos’ slaying of Loki and allow the god of mischief to survive to torment Thor for another day.
Do you think we will see Loki somehow get resurrected or events in the past altered whereupon he never died? Or will Avengers 4 be the last we see of Loki and he truly died at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War?
