Drew Goddard the Oscar-nominated writer behind The Martian and the creator of Marvel’s Daredevil just got tapped to write and direct Fox’s X-Men spin-off, X-Force. Goddard was also expected to direct the Amazing Spider-Man spin-off Sinister Six for Sony until the studio switched directions.
X-Force will feature both Deadpool and Cable according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Not only will Ryan Reynolds be starring in the movie he will also be producing alongside Lauren Shulder Donner, and Simon Kinberg. Josh Brolin is also expected to reprise his role as Cable.
The movie has been in production for awhile. Jeff Wadlow had written a draft and was expected to direct, but this new X-Force movie with Drew Goddard at the helm will follow the storylines in Deadpool and the upcoming Deadpool 2.
In the comics, X-Force spun out of New Mutants and the X-Men in the 1990s. The original team was created by Rob Liefeld, the co-creator of Deadpool. The team has changed members since the 90s, but the original lineup consisted of Cable, Boom Boom, Cannonball, Domino, Feral, Shatterstar, and Warpath. They are much more militant and aggressive compared to the X-Men.
Their original enemies were the terrorist organization known as the Mutant Liberation Front led by Stryfe.
In the 2014 miniseries Deadpool vs X-Force, the X-Force team goes on a journey through history as they attempt to chase down Deadpool who has been hired by a villain to effect certain changes to the timeline. The team chases Deadpool back to the American Revolution, into the Civil War, and even takes a pit stop to World War II! It could be a really fun adaptation to see on the big screen!
Goddard is currently working with Fox on Bad Times at the El Royale starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth. He wrote the script and will direct.
We will get to see Cable and Domino on the big screen in Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018.
