Marvel’s Victoria Alonso: “The World is Ready” for a Gay Superhero

Marvel’s production chief Victoria Alonso declared the world is ready for a gay hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Alonso spoke with Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of Captain Marvel where she addressed the reports that Marvel is looking to cast a gay actor for their upcoming Eternals film. Alonso stated, “We are going to cast the best Eternals cast that we can. And when we are ready to announce it, we promise you we will.”

Alonso was then asked about why Marvel is so committed to diversity, she responds:

“Why wouldn’t we be? Why wouldn’t we be? I’m so passionate about this. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why wouldn’t we only want to be recognized by one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, it’s inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal and the diversity and inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.”

Finally, Alonso was asked if the world is ready for an openly gay superhero. She states, “The world is ready, the world is ready.”

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t featured an openly gay superhero, they’ve been quite prominent in The CW’s Arrowverse.

Sara Lance, the White Canary, Curtis Holt aka Mr. Terrific, Supergirl’s sister Alex Danvers, Nyssa al Ghul, Hartley Rathaway aka the Pied Piper, Leo Snart of Earth-X, and Ray Terrill aka The Ray of Earth-X are all prominent LGBT superheroes or supervillains in the Arrowverse with the exception of Alex Danvers, who is a government agent.

Not to mention they introduced Ruby Rose’s Batwoman and she will be getting her own show. Batwoman will be a lesbian in the show.

We’ve also seen LGBT characters on the big screen. [easyazon_link identifier=”B07NTRGVCN” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Deadpool 2[/easyazon_link] revealed that Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a lesbian with her girlfriend Yukio.

The world is definitely ready for a gay superhero. In fact, it already has a number of them.
