New Spider-Man 3 Rumor Claims Emma Stone Will Play Spider-Gwen

A new Spider-Man 3 rumor claims that Sony Pictures wants Emma Stone to play Spider-Gwen in the film.

The rumor comes from Daniel Ricthtman’s Patreon and was shared to Twitter via user @NacaoMarvell.

Using Google translate, NacaoMarvell claims Richtman reported, “Sony wants Emma Stone in Spider-Man 3 as Spider-Gwen. Tobey’s Peter would have a son. Tom Holland would like his Spider-Man in space.”

Stone previously played Gwen Stacy, the character who becomes Spider-Gwen in an alternate dimension in Marvel Comics, in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

However, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Stone’s Stacy dies, much like she did in the main 616 universe of Marvel Comics in The Amazing Spider-Man #121.

Stacy falls to her death after Green Goblin kidnaps her. Spider-Man is unable to reach her in time and her skull hits the pavement.

In the comics, she simply dies from the height of the fall as Spider-Man is able to prevent her from hitting the pavement below.

While Stone’s Stacy might have died in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, if this rumor is to be believed, she could be playing another alternate version of the character in order to become Spider-Gwen.

In the comics, Spider-Gwen eventually becomes the superhero identity of high schooler Gwendolyn Stacy who resides on Earth-65. She is bitten by a genetically engineered spider and given spider-like powers similar to Spider-Man.

She originally uses her powers for superficial purposes, but after hearing her dad criticize her, she decides to change her way and steps in to stop a number of individuals from bullying Peter Parker.

Parker fed up with the bullying experiments with himself and is eventually transformed into the Lizard. Spider-Gwen not knowing that the Lizard is Parker ends up killing him, and is subsequently branded a murderer when he reverts back to his human form upon death.

It’s hard to imagine Stone taking on the role of a teenager given she’s now 31 and will be 32 in November. It’s more than likely we might get an older version of Spider-Gwen if this rumor is to be believed.

However, they might follow through with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 idea that Peter Parker would concoct a formula that could resurrect his friends.

Dennis Leary, who played Captain George Stacy, explained the idea “Part of the discussion was that, possibly in ‘3,’ there was this idea at one point that Spider-Man would be able to take this formula and regenerate the people in his life that had died.”

He added, “So there was this discussion that Captain Stacy would come back even bigger in episode three.” It’s also likely Stone’s Stacy would be resurrected as well.

It’s also possible; however farfetched, she could be playing the Gwen Stacy that Bryce Dallas Howard portrayed in Spider-Man 3. That Gwen Stacy was already older and was a college classmate of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker.

While the return of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy is certainly intriguing, there is room for concern about this rumor in general, especially the part about Tom Holland wanting to take Spider-Man to space.

Spider-Man is best served grounded in New York City where he is “Your Neighborhood Spider-Man.” His stories are better when he’s working to save individuals and the small guy rather than trying to stop cosmic level threats like Thanos with the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Hopefully, Marvel goes smaller with Spider-Man in the future rather than bigger, although that doesn’t appear to be the case as a recent rumor details Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining the Spider-Man 3 film as Doctor Strange.

It’s possible this could still be grounded as Strange might just open up the multiverse to Holland’s Spider-Man where he takes on classic Spider-Man villains like Electro and the Sinister Six.
