Noah Hawley Provides Update on His Possible Star Trek Film

Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley provided an update on his possible Star Trek film.

Speaking to Deadline at the Winter 2020 Television Critics Association Press Tour, Hawley revealed that his version of Star Trek would be his own.

When questioned on whether or not the film would feature the current Star Trek cast that includes Chris Pine, Hawley replied,  “I have my own take on Star Trek.”

Hawley also discussed why he is interested in Star Trek, but also noted nothing is set in stone and he’s still in discussions with Paramount about a Star Trek film.

On what his take might look like he detaild what he loves about Star Trek, “Going back to what I loved about the series Next Generation, when a lot of franchises focus on ‘might makes right’, Star Trek is about exploration and humanity at its best, and diversity and creative problem solving.”

Hawley continued, “There’s nothing better than that moment when William Shatner puts on his reading glasses and lowers Khan’s shields. It doesn’t cost anything. But it’s that triumphant feeling about smarting your enemy. For me it’s about to getting to those elements of the show. I don’t necessarily find action in and of itself interesting unless it’s story.”

He would then detail that he hasn’t actually struck a deal with Paramount about a Star Trek film yet.

“So, it’s early days, I’m still talking with Paramount and I have a take and I gotta write a script.”

Hawley then indicated that if his vision for Star Trek does get the green light it probably would not connect to Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard shows.

When asked if he plans on connecting with Kurtzman to talk about the franchise, Hawley stated, “I should. I know Alex. There isn’t a mandate from Paramount to connect it. And on some levels, there’s a bit of the wall, the TV version and the film version.”

Hawley then detailed that if his Star Trek project does get the greenlight he aims to make it “respectful to the underlying material.”

“I have my own story and want to make sure as I did with Fargo and Legion that I’m respectful to the underlying material. That I’m not unintentionally changing things that people love or feel passionate about. So, it’s important to do that research as I go.”

If what Hawley says holds up this would be welcomed news to fans who feel that the current crop of movies and TV shows are a mismatch for the tone and themes that have guided Star Trek since its creation.

What is your take on Noah Hawley’s comments on Star Trek? Could we see a return to Next Generation style of storytelling? Or will we still see a more modern brooding style of sci-fi as seen with Star Trek: Discovery and much of the JJ-Verse films?
