Report: A Batman Beyond Movie is in Development

There has been hope and talk by fans of a Batman Beyond movie in conjunction with the show’s 20th anniversary in 2019. Well, we could be getting one, only not the kind most may be expecting. Geeks WorldWide is reporting Warner Animation is developing a Batman Beyond animated movie.

This report is based on concept art posted to the subreddit r/DCEULeaks depicting a new look for Bruce’s protege, Terry McGinnis, who took over for him after Wayne was too weak — physically and in principle — to carry on the mantle. What appears to be Terry also stands before a display case of Bat Family costumes similar to one Bruce kept in the Batcave in the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LZZ8MU3″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman Beyond[/easyazon_link] cartoon series.

Daniel Ritchman, a writer at SuperBroMovies, also shared a leaked image of a bulletin board for projects in development. Cat in the Hat, The Jetsons, and the Lego logo (more than likely signifying the second Lego Movie) are visibly pinned under 2019-2020.

But it is a DC logo pinned close to the top at center-right that is most telling. GWW believes this to be the placeholder for the Batman Beyond animated feature. A simple DC symbol is vague and could mean anything but Batman Beyond is the one IP generating the most buzz.

The animation division might be shooting for a 2022 release that could be theatrical. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s success is considered their primary motivator so they see dollar signs. Reign of the Supermen and Death of Superman and other DC animated features (including Mask of the Phantasm in 1993) were shown in theaters so it doesn’t mean much. Batman Beyond‘s run could be small and nothing special.

Kevin Smith was jazzed up recently about the idea of a live-action Batman Beyond film bringing back Michael Keaton, saying it would easily make a billion dollars. That is still a long way off but an animated movie might get something like it pushed into production in the future.

No potential cast was leaked but Will Friedle (voice of Terry McGinnis) tweeted his interest.
