Report: Marvel Taps Destin Daniel Cretton to Direct Shang Chi Movie

Marvel has reportedly tapped director Destin Daniel Cretton to direct an upcoming Shang-Chi movie.

Variety reports that Cretton will direct the film based off a script from Dave Callaham that “will ultimately modernize the Shang-Chi story and character arc.”

Shang-Chi was created by steve Englehart and Jim Starlin and first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 back in 1973.

The character is commonly called the Master of Kung Fu. He was born in communist China to a white American mother. However, his father was the villainous Fu Manchu. He was extensively trained in a number of martial arts abilities by his father, but discovers his father’s true nature when he is sent to assassinate a British doctor.

He would encounter Fu Manchu’s archenemy Sir Denis Nayland Smith and discover the truth about his father from his mother. Shang-Chi would then work to oppose and defeat his father fighting his adoptive brother Midnight along the way and allying with Black Jack Tarr and Sir Denis Nayland Smith.

Cretton already has connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is directing Warner Bros. Just Mercy starring Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan. He also worked with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler on the television series Scenes for Minors.
