Wrap Report Umberto Gonzalez revealed on his new podcast Heroic Insider that Batgirl will not be appearing in Justice League.
Rumors swirled that Batgirl might be introduced when Joss Whedon stepped in to fill Zack Snyder’s shoes after he left the project following his daughter’s suicide. Along with directing the reshoots and completing Justice League, Avengers director Whedon is scheduled to direct an upcoming Batgirl movie. His attachment to Batgirl really stirred the rumors he would bring her into Justice League.
However, Umberto Gonzalez shut down those rumors.
“Not only is there no Batgirl in Justice League, there is no additional cast during the additional photography set of Justice League that is going right now in London.”
He reiterated, “Again, no additional cast in the Justice League additional photography set.”
And then just in case you didn’t get it he said it a third time, “Joss Whedon, additional photography, no Batgirl, no additional cast.”
While Gonzalez was extremely clear in his convictions about no new cast members or characters involved in the reshoots, nothing has been confirmed by Whedon, Geoff Johns, or Warner Bros. There is still a possibility Warner Bros. might find their Batgirl and slip her in for a cameo. We do know that her father, Jim Gordon, will be in the movie.
However, Whedon previously expressed his displeasure in setting up future films with Avengers.
Whedon has also noted that he wants to finish the Batgirl script before he even thinks about casting. And with all of his time devoted to finishing Justice League it would be quite difficult to find his Batgirl before Justice League hits theaters.
I don’t have my eye on anybody. I feel like I’m creating this character, I’m gonna dialogue with her and then we’ll see who joins that later on… I doubt it will be a name. This is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her.
He also expressed he was interested in more of unknowns rather than movie stars.
I’m not against movie stars, they’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right. And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight so its not as critical.
