Report: Thor Director Taika Waititi in Negotiations for a Role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad is going to be a big movie, at least in terms of its cast, which keeps on growing. In a surprise move, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is the latest name added to the equation.

Deadline ran the exclusive that Waititi is up for a role but there is no word on what it is or how big. They add — and it should be stressed — he is only in talks at the moment, not fully confirmed as on board.

Waititi could do any number of things but based on the short notice he will probably perform a small task such as a cameo, a brief featured part, voice-over, or mo-cap work. We don’t know yet who will mo-cap King Shark and his performances as Korg in Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame makes Waititi a great choice for that. However, something else Deadline mentioned stands out. The Suicide Squad’s table read is September 11th. That might mean they or their source anticipates he will attend, indicating he may have a speaking part. Waititi could be Bat-Mite if that ends up happening. A Busy Guy

Taika Waititi is keeping a busy schedule lately. His new comedy released by Fox Searchlight Jojo Rabbit, in which he plays Hitler, comes out in October and he is out promoting it. He begins work soon on his next film as a director, Next Goal Wins, and he is attached in some form to an animated Flash Gordon remake at Disney. New Recruits

We previously reported comedian Steve Agee was joining the Suicide Squad cast as the voice of King Shark. The news came out soon after Nathan Fillion is coming aboard too. German comic Flula Borg was cast recently also in an unknown role. (Related: Report: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad Casts King Shark)

The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, and Idris Elba. It heads into production Sept. 23rd and hits theaters Aug. 6, 2021.
